Newbie looking to create a listening space

I hope this is the proper place to post this.

Before I begin I want to thank all of you guys on this forum for giving me more than enough information to research and look for as I have been lurking on here for a while.

Now to my problem. I am looking to build what I would deem an entry level setup mainly turntable and bookshelf speakers to start, I will list what I am leaning towards and it would be great if you guys would be able to let me know if you think I am on the right track or if I should swap out a item I have seen for a different one. I am trying to keep the budget some where in the $800 to $1000 range if possible.

Turntable

Technics SL-1200 (used if I can find one approx $300)
OR
Pro-Ject Debut Carbon ($400 on amazon)

Amp/Receiver

Lepai 2020 mini amp ($18.00) PLUS PYLE-PRO PP444 Ultra Compact Phono Turntable Preamp ($17.00)
OR
Sherwood RX-4109 105 Watt Stereo Receiver ($130)

Speakers

Audioengine A2 Desktop Speakers ($200) or P4s or A5s if you guys think they are worth the extra expense.

I am not set on any of these items , but they seem to be the names I see the most when looking up equipment in my price range, any help would be greatly appreciated, Thank you all for your time ! Have a great day.

If you're looking at the A2 or A5 speakers, you won't need an amp (though you would still need a phono preamp).

If it were me, I'd probably get the A5s (there are some for sale right now in Barter Town), an ART DJPRE and the TT of your choice.

Even with new speakers and a new Pro-Ject, you'd be around $850.

My honest opinion is you can do really well in the used department. Given your budget you can end up with some really nice stuff. Sounds like bookshelves are the style of speaker you are looking for. They are a nice path as you can always add a sub down the road if you are looking for a nicer bottom range.

Are you looking for more modern equipment or vintage?
How important are aesthetics of the equipment to you?

There are some very nice finds in the $300-400 range for used turntables. The Technics one you mentioned is a great table. Also used bookshelf speakers in the $150-300 range are often wonderful. Then you could add a receiver or integrated amp with an onboard phono stage in the $200-350 range and have a nice set up.

I would recommend considering to become a subscriber on this site as you have access to Bartertown. This is where I have struck many wonderful deals and dealt with incredible individuals. Easily worth the $25 subscription donation. I have picked up equipment that I could not dream of picking up for the kinds of value you can find on there.

Just my two cents. I wish you the best of luck in putting together a wonderful system that you will enjoy for many years. My final words of wisdom are to enjoy putting it together and take your time and do your research. You are more likely to be satisfied with your purchases as a result.

One of the best beginner setups I can recommend if you want to go all new is:

Pro-Ject Carbon --> Marantz PM6004 --> Wharfedale 10.1s

I wouldn't recommend using audioengine powered monitors (or any other powered monitors) for a decent listening room. They are really intended for near-field/desktop listening.

I would recommend front ported speakers if you are looking at bookshelves, unless you can pull them out from the wall a bit.

B&W dm302 maybe or a used pair of the 685s?

But what what JumpingBean suggested with the project and the marantz sounds good!
Maybe a Used Rega would work well too. Also a nice NAD used integrated would work well too.
