Hello,
I'm new here, and have just returned to the wonderful world of vinyl. I'm fortunate to have a few excellent vintage and used record shops near me, and actually purchase my TT at one of them (the best), Freewheelin' Records, in Mission, BC, Canada.
Setup:
- Technics Sl-1401 with Ortofon VMS20E MK II
- just a basic Onkyo TX-8020 Amp (I only use it for my TT)
- SP-FS52 speakers (again, entry level but excellent sound reproduction on everything from symphonies to the hardest rock)
I love the sound quality of the Technics 1401. It is in new condition, and even came with the original bill of sale from 1979. However, I have two questions for all you experts who don't mind a new guy asking what may amount to stupid questions!
1. Is it recommended to use a record weight for this particular turntable? Or, will it put too much weight on the bearings? Also, is a weight even a useful thing (i.e. does it enhance sound quality?)
2. I know the reputation of the Ortofon VMS20E MK II is very high among audiophiles, but I don't know the age, or how worn the stylus is. So, as I can't afford a 2M Blue, would a 2M Red be a good replacement?
Thank you.
