Newbie Needs advice..maybe "needs" is a strong word..should be wants

Ok so like 10 years ago I trade a woman a tuna fish submarine sandwich and a pack of Kool cigarettes for a crate full of records. Not being about quality I bought me an inexpensive console record player to play them on and appease the wife as it looked more like furniture than stereo equipment. I eventually bought a smaller better RCA console player 5 years ago. It served it's purpose but now it's dying. I am not technically savvy as I was electrocuted as child and shied away from learning the arts. There is your backstory.
I want to listen to my records and have them sound better. I don't want to break the bank just want a little bit more quality noise.
I have the option to buy a
Vintage JVC Model VR-5521 4 Channel FM-AM Stereo Receiver for $40...is that a decent deal if it works good and there is no static when changing the dials?

Also I am hemming and hawing on buying a Audio Technica AT-LP60 turntable. I imagine you get what you pay for, but will this set up be a significant upgrade over my mono RCA console? I can maybe get one those U-Turn orbits I see referred to on these boards but then I would have to wait another month to listen to records......and I need the Foghat yo!....I need it. Perhaps "Needs" is a strong word for Foghat.

Aim higher and get the U-Turn.

As for the JVC, for just $40 nothing is a "bad deal." I paid more than that to take my family out for dinner the other night.
 
You might be able to find a great deal on Craigslist. Record players are still thought of as "obsolete" so there should be people practically giving them away. Might need a new needle and some basic maintenance, but you can find older high-end stuff that'll as good or better than new-end made in China junk where every corner to cut was cut.
 
I would get a new UTurn Orbit turntable rather then getting a TT from Craig's List or EBay. The killer here is the shipping. A very high percentage of used turntables get lousy packing by the owner resulting in a box of junk by the time it gets to you. Buying a new turntable will insure that every item will be well packed and the shipping is free.

$40 is a good price for the receiver and that should get you started and the Radio Shack speakers will be fine to start out with. I don't know that model receiver and it may not have a phono input. If it doesn't then you will need to get an external phono preamp. The UTurn folks recommend the ArtDJ and you can order it with the turntable.
 
IMO, lack of a dustcover isn't a total turn-off, especially at $50 (you could probably get it for less anyways). Yeah, I'd rather have it with the original dustcover and hinges, but a set-on dustcover is easy enough to fabricate or even buy on ebay. Leaves you a few bucks for a better cart.
