Newbie Needs Vintage Pioneer Speaker Help!

If you ever have the chance, recruit your brothers help to haul and set up one of the best sounding vintage speakers I've heard, The Pioneer HPM-200.

Location itself is horrible as I live in the middle of nowhere. I DID find my SX-780 via Craigslist. However, there is very little in the area, & not much in the way of quality finds, so listening first hand might be a little tricky in my situation.

May I suggest the Wharfedale W-60 series?? I fell in love with them in the early '60's (2 speaker model) and now have the 3 speaker W-60E model...a bit better tweeter then the 60D model.

Advents are good. I like my Smaller Advents better then the Old Large Advent or the 5012 series.

Yes indeed they do.

I've heard more gear at AK gatherings than everywhere else combined. It's really surprising to sit in a room full of people and listen to gear. Some will love what's playing, others may flee the room. :-]

If 'nowhere' is anywhere near one of those, it would be a good and friendly place to audition as well as buy. You might check the Events & Happenings forum. I frequent the one near Kansas City and it's always a relaxing and fun time.
 
hpm 60 and 100's are the go to pioneer speaker. if you go anything else pioneer don't pay to much, cuz if you ever A/B them to the hpm's you'll be bummed (for not going hpm in the first place). there are other pioneer speakers out there just as good and even better than the standard hpm's but they are very hard to find.
 
I purchased a good looking SX-680 from Goodwill, but one of the power modules was shot and have a replacement coming. It looks really nice paired with the PL-112D. I picked up a pair of ghetto Pioneer CS G104A off Craigslist for $10. The covers need to be replaced but the speakers themselves are in great shape. With 10" provides a ton of base, but they definitely are not a high end speaker. I also bought a Pioneer cassette deck CT-F500 for $10. Doesn't have the wood veneer like the rest of the stuff, but I'll likely end up selling all four pcs as a set down the road.

I have two SX-780 receivers. I've found mine really like EPI 100 speakers. Not too big, not too small. They have a nice sound and repair parts are readily available through Human Speakers if you need them. If you want to stay in the Pioneer line, I'd go with the HPM-60 speakers. The 100s are top-of-the-line, but I felt like my 780 had just barely enough power to drive them well. The 60s will drive easier and probably sound better with the 780. But, you'll spend significantly more on the HPMs than the EPIs.

I can vouch for the S-710's as well after getting the refoam done on a set I recently picked up. Putting them through their paces with Chicago V, and WOW. The ribbon tweeter brings highs and especially cymbals more alive than what I have had in the past, and the bass they produce is nothing to sneeze at either.
