hello everyone! I’m loving my restored Marantz 2325 however I’m having some issues with the speakers ?connection. I have a pair of klipsch and a pair of dual. Sometimes despite what looks like a good connection, my speakers will cut in and out. When I turn up the bass and volume, sound comes back on briefly. What speaker wire should I be using please? Rigid ends? Perhaps the wiring is old? They came with the klipsch set. What’s the wiring recommendations for this receiver and speaker combination please? Thank you

sounds like your amp is going into protection for a brief period....I could be wrong but wait for the experts.....could be problem with internal speaker connections as in something is crossed or your just overpowering your speakers so it kicks into protection....it plays fine at lower volume? what Klipsch speakers are u using?
 
Doesn't sound like a wiring problem but you could check it out by trying some inexpensive generic speaker cable from Home Depot or Lowe's.

If that fixes the problem then you can shop for glitzy speaker cable if you feel the urge, If it doesn't, well, then I'd be having a discussion with whoever did the restoration.
 
The amp is 44 years old and, if it's still running on all its original parts, needs to be checked out by a real tech and brought up to date. Otherwise, you're just living on borrowed time with it. It was a great amp in 1976 when new for $800 so not cheap in todays dollars. But, it's not at its "prime" anymore.

So you're running both pairs of speakers at the same time and it's shutting off? What about running one pair at a time? What kind of Dual speakers are you running? Dual speakers as in the cheap crappy car audio speakers?
 
Hi everyone and thank you fr your suggestions. I'll try the suggestion of snipping the ends to start and then I'll go from there I guess. My speakers are Dual SB1080 and klipsch (which have also cut in and out). Do I have them wired in wrong? And what kind of wiring do you recommend? I want the best sound I can - help! Thank you in advance, Julie

Also, I should add that when I slide the balance knob to the right I lose all speaker sound, 1/2 the speakers when I move it to the left.... Thoughts?
Any of you live in the Okanagan and do home stereo servicing by chance?! Lol.
 
Sounds like you have a combination of issues. 1) The receiver could probably use a good cleaning. All of the switches and knobs are opportunities for intermittent sound.

2) The wiring into the speaker and into the receiver looks a little messy. There could be a chance of a short. Even if one strand of + touches -, it could be enough to send the amp into protection. Try redoing the wire ends with a proper wire trimmer/snip. You can buy one at most hardware stores for less than $20. The wire ends should be twisted neatly, no frayed strands.
 
last picture, you can see a strand of + wire sticking out, also, on you amp connection, you have a red striped wire on one channel, main right to neg but also have a red striped wire on pos, remote right, if speakers are out of phase, not the best sound so make sure positives are to pos and neg to neg from amp to speaker, but I don't know how you have them wired to speakers either....and like baco99 stated, looks a little messy and I agree with baco99, switches on receiver could use a good cleaning, which should have been done when u had unit rebuilt
 
What are the impedances of the two speakers? If you are running them at the same time, this could be an issue.

You should be able to ascertain this from the labels on the back of the speakers.

Looking at pics, the Klipsch are 8ohm and the Duals are from 4-8 ohm

That could mean they're not making full connection. Also, in the last picture, it looks like strands from one pole could be touching the other, which would cause a partial short circuit at least.

The best thing would be to remove all connections and start again. The easiest thing would be to connect one pair of speakers, make sure they work, then connect the second pair.

At the receiver end, make sure the locking latches at the bottom of the posts are fully open when removing and inserting the wire. Then twist and trim the ends neatly to make sure the wire ends fill fit inside the post. Match the colour stripes on the cables with the colour stripes on the posts. Make sure the locking latches are fully open wile inserting the wire ends and that they fit comfortably inside before locking.

At the speaker end, twist and trim the ends neatly and make sure no strands are sticking out on the sides. Match the colours on the posts with the colours on the wires.

When all connections look good for the first pair of speakers, turn the amp on and play it while adjusting the knobs and sliders. If it works well, turn the amp off and wire the second pair in the same way.
