Hi. My name is Rusty McIntyre. I recently retired and came across this site mentioned in a You tube video. So, I am looking for some newbie advice. I have an old system I picked up from the PX in Japan way back in 1979 when I was in the service. It is a Sansui CA-2000 Pre-amp, BA-2000 amp, TU-517 receiver and an Akai 747 reel to reel. all of the components still work with the exception of the power meters on the amp. I have seen many videos on swapping out the caps and resistors on the amp and pre-amp. My question is this. Is the system worth either getting the meters up and running and/or swapping out the aged components? Also, can someone direct me to a reliable source to get a second reel for the Akai.

Welcome to the Land of Sound, m'8.

As per your question,
you might ask the same

As per the "fixing",
depends if you

the work.
If it's working...
leave it alone.

Welcome to AK!

Your system is absolutely worth updating, although it won't come cheap for a good tech to do the work. You could start another thread (General Audio Discussion) and ask for suggestion for a tech in your area.

As to the second reel, AK has a separate, subscriber only forum called Barter Town. BT is a forum where members buy, sell and trade with each other. Mostly audio, but there are other categories. Cost for membership is $25 per year, which helps to keep the lights on here. Click on Subscribe in the upper header. Once signed up, you can then place a WTB ad.

It is all working. Except for the power meters. Had a local guy repair the power supply a few years back on the BA-2000 and he said he didn't want to go any further. So, it could just be the meters themselves. I have seen donor amps with working meters that are under 400. But if it is anything other than that I would have to farm it out. At this point it is more a want than a need.

Welcome from Michigan. If you like the sound and the looks, that system is absolutely worth keeping. Even if you have to spend a bit of cash to get it tip top. Since you're the original owner, you know how well (or poorly) it was treated over the years.
