Greetings all from the state of Mississippi!
I just recently found this forum while researching/shopping for a vintage stereo receiver and turntable.
A little history: I purchased my first system at age 13 from Randy Hooper at Hooper Sound in Meridian, MS in 1978. Here is the setup including total price paid:
Pioneer SX 780 receiver
Technics SL D2 turntable
Pioneer CTF 500 cassette deck
Pioneer HPM 100 speakers
Total price paid $1135.00
That was a great system. It sure did give my mom and dad fits with the release of AC/DC's Back in Black in the summer of 1980.
The most exciting part of this new "quest" is that I still own the HPM 100 speakers. I'm looking to possibly test the waters with some of the more obscure receivers from that era like maybe Hitachi, or possibly with another Pioneer. I would love to have some feedback from forum members on their personal experiences and choices.

You have fallen into the vintage trap my friend, and it's a good place to be! Check that auction site often to get an idea what certain models are going for. You may possibly get a smoking deal on a good unit, Also consider subscribing to AK so you can check the Barter Town listings. I have had many excellent transactions with other members over the years, and trust them more than some yahoo on that auction site.
