newer style knobs for the mc2105?

all this talk about knobs recently is making me want to change the knobs on my mc2105. I have a c33 preamp on its way to me now ( thanks Russell aka Mc_man!!) and would like to get some matching knobs for it. I have Andy over and audioclassics on the case but thought I would ask if anyone has any experience with which ones will fit the 2105. I remember seeing photos of someones 2105 with the newer style knobs and another member commenting how he had done the same, cant seem to find the pic. any help would be great! thanks , jeremy

If you can, put the older knobs on the pre. However, it will be a chore to find the smaller knobs. The older knobs have a bit more dignity....

agreed! I love the older style knobs too but I dont think they made smaller ones to fit the eq section on the c33, does anyone know if they did make smaller, all silver knobs?

can anyone remember seeing the picture of the 2105 with newer style knobs? I'm sure it was here on the mcintosh forum, just cant find it.
 
I'm afraid that the only source you will find for the smaller knobs is the MI-3 scope, and they made very few of those, which is a bummer. At least with the 2105 with the newer knobs, it still looks clean with no plastic bezel, so you have that going for you...which is nice.

You guys are making it sound like 1978 again.... and the snswer is still the same now.... buy the MC2125 or MC2205 and get a free set of knobs to swap any way you want too, or just listen to the newer better sounding amp and let your nephew/son in law etc. join you in the sound of McIntosh by passing on your old stuff.

For the amount of time I have taken to look for extra knobs and buying every one I can when they come up, I believe it would have been easier to buy a whole amp just for the knobs...sound advice.

well some people want to drive a honda civic and some want to drive a 57' chevy bel air, there is always " newer and better" but a classic is a classic!:thmbsp:

Don't think a MC2205 is equal to a Civic... but I also can't imagine a BelAir with raised white letter tires and spinner wheels.

Back in the day....those trying to match knobs were mostly trying to be....trifty and ended up being way behind and created the image that Mac never updated and greatly improved their products.

well here is the situation. I have a mc2105 in absolutely perfect shape, brand new NOS glass, really looks brand new. I love this amplifier and I am happy with it in every way. I just bought( actually in transit to me now) a minty c33 in beautiful condition. now keeping in mind that I am an artist by profession and aesthetics play a huge part of my life, I literally pay for this stuff by making things look beautiful. also as a tinkerer and hot rodder I have a uncontrollable urge to make things my own. so here I am with two amazing Mcintosh components that I am proud to own but would like them to match a little better. would you really suggest I get rid of an amplifier I am extremely happy with just to get one with matching knobs? wouldn't the fist logical step be to look for replacement knobs? I know this all may seem silly/petty/stupid to some, but there are at least a few of us who are interested in this. Any helpful input you have would be greatly appreciated. thank you

Yeah, me too I have the small EQ knob sized c33 knobs on my MQ101 when I really need one inner and outter knob from the c33, and three 2205 knobs to make the MQ look right. I now have an MR80 on its way back from terry, it will also match (yeah thats MOSTLY why I bought it, I did read it was a better tuner than the almighty MR78) but I'd love the 2205 knobs but I dont think I'll ever get them. Mcintosh should REALLY consider making those knobs again. I cant imagine them not selling.
 
I do not think it is silly but you have to remember that even though it sayes Laboratory, McIntosh is a manufacturing company. They employ (ed) people to make new products for people to buy.... not revamp old stuff. They changed the look so we could sell you new stuff, that is what paid our mortgages and put food on the table. They made it difficult to buy knobs back then because they expected people to keep vintages togather, to buy new, not mix them up. They felt, no believed that the new products were better than the old.
 
sure I Understand BUT my MQ101 is needed for the XR7's!! hey I bought the newer MR80 cause it goes with the c33 and MC2205! I really want an MCD 7007 if I can get a decent deal and an extra laser assembly!! :)

.....thanks, Count....I wish someone could post a photo of the smaller knobs mounted on a 2105, but I don't guess it matters....I retired the 2105 and a 2200 when Crown K2's absolutely blew their doors off about 6 years ago matched with the C39....then multi-channel McIntosh units with 110 and 112 db signal/noise bested the K2's, but not by much....took wind-chimes to call that one.....
 
Yeah, a 2125 is for sale locally, good price too. Remove the plastic bezel on the glass, swap the knobs then nice looking match. But might have to wait, really might have to wait, too many brands in the fire right now, but when it rains it pours.
 
The best I ever did was buy new end pieces for my MR78 and MC2125 from the place in Colorado (I don't think they are available any longer) to match my C34V and MX130. The combination looks perfect now.
