NewLocal music appreciation group seeks selections for consideration

I'm starting a new local music appreciation group. We will consider four pieces for discussion at each monthly meeting. The first two pieces I have chosen are John Lennon's Imagine and Black Sabbath's War Pigs.

I need your help choosing two that diverge considerably from the other two any genre other than rock and they should be lyrical.
What ya say?

When you say anything besides rock, do you mean punk rock would be ok? Or are you looking for something like a jazz choice?
If punk would be ok, then try Husker Du's Zen Arcade. 2 record set great, monumental in my opinion.
If something like jazz, the Miles Davis Bitches Brew. That should be worth a whole nights discussion on its own.

Thanks for the contributions. With the selections we already have I'd like to diverge completely from the rock genres for the other selections

Elmore James - The Sky is Crying

Etta James - At Last - Lyrics

Little Walter / Boom, Boom Out Goes the Lights

Fairport Convention "unhalfbricking"

Scottish/English Folk, but they cover some early Bob Dylan, and the playing/singing is amazing. Lyrical brilliance throughout and it should spark a lot of discussion about the role of songs in carrying cultural narratives to a wide audience.

Two selections which are diverse could include something exploratory/improvisational and a down home blues. A Love Supreme: Coltrane's Ode to God, and I'm A Man: Muddy Water's Ode to Self.

Sonny Boy Williamson - Bring It On Home

Isley Brothers - Twist and Shout

The Marvelettes - Please Mr. Postman (1961)

THE SHIRELLES - Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow [ 60's Video In NEW STEREO ]

Little Anthony "Tears on My Pillow"

Woody Guthrie "Dust Bowl Ballads", anything from Mississippi John Hurt.

Or " Mermaid Avenue" by Billy Bragg and Wilco (Interpretations of Woody Guthrie lyrics that were never set to music).

Some good stuff in this thread. Do the meetings have a theme that links the records together?

Crooked Still: "Shaken by a Low Sound" (Bluegrass with a cello, even a few blues tunes included)

If lyrics are the focus, anything by Tracy Chapman would be good to discuss.

Another suggestion. For lyrics there are so many Bob Dylan tunes. Visions of Johanna, Desolation Row come to mind.

Or for that matter:

What's Going On? (Marvin Gaye)
War Pigs (Sabbath)

David Sylvian - a founding member of "Japan",
his voice and the musicians he plays with make his music very intriguing for audio buffs ...
Recommended intro album - "Secrets of the Beehive" [1987]
Suggested tracks - "Orpheus", "When the Poets Dreamed of Angels", or "Forbidden Colours"
(aka, the theme to Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence) ...
