I've been playing around with this for a while. (The idea for years, and this set up for months) A friend was over and we set it up just kinda for fun, not expecting it to sound great, but more a demonstration of how the Polk SDAs work. He has a pair and he loves them, as do I.
So, the system consists of my Sansui AU 6600, NHT SA3, NHT SA 2, NHT VT 1.2, NHT Superzero, and NHT SW3. The Sansui is driving the highs on the VT 1.2s, and the SA2 is driving the 8" woofers. The SA3 is appropriately driving the SW3.
That was the what we were listening to when I got the idea. I hooked the "B" side of the Sansui to the Superzeros, wired in a hafler matrix, with the channels and phase inverted.
I wish I had video of when I switched it on. My friend literally looked around the room with a confused look on his face and said "What just happened?"
We spent the afternoon dialing it in, which I have continued to do for a couple of months now. Honestly, and I think my friend would agree, it sounds better than his SDAs. (I don't recall what model he has). While I expected the effect to work, I thought there would be issues with phase and oddness in the high end, but there just isn't. It sounds really good, and has an incredible soundstage. I keep saying I'm going to take it apart and set up my AR9s, but I can't bring myself to do it.
Please excuse the poor cable management. I'm still working on stuff.
If you ever want to set up an SDA like system for not much money, grab two pair of Superzeros and a subwoofer. Or keep an eye out for some NHT towers and get the smaller speakers with matching drivers. It works better than it has any right to.
Anyway, I just wanted to share. If anyone is in the Denver area and would like a listen I'd be happy to show it off.
