NHT Speaker Score

Stopped at a g-sale the other day and despite my best efforts to not acquire additional gear I bought a pair of NHT VT 1.2's for a paltry $20! They have two front facing 4.5'' woofers with a single 1'' soft dome tweeter and an 8'' side firing woofer. They had been in the basement for some time so I gave them a thorough cleaning. They are a solid 8+/10 and I have to say that they sound exceptionally good. So far, at lower volumes I would say that they excel with mid-range and imagining. I dropped them off at my office after I bought them and have them hooked up here for now.

they look nice! How do they sound?

Thanks guys! Lots of positive feedback. I didn't know much about NHT so I did a little digging. Made in Benicia, CA which is really cool. I guess Ken Kantor the designer/founder was at one time a member here. It also turns out that these were fairly pricey speakers when they were new. It was obvious at the g-sale that these were well constructed speakers not the typical rack system junk I'm very used to seeing. Cabinets have a nice black lacquer over MDF which is cool (http://mail.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=390230&page=2).

In any case, I just have them in my office right now because I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with them and I purchased them at a location near my work. That being said they are just hooked up to my work system which consists of a vintage Onkyo integrated A-7070, tuner T-4090 and I use my computer to play .mp3's. Quite frankly, I think think they sound exceptional. I was shocked when I first heard them. They aren't as efficient as a lot of more contemporary designs (86db/w/m) but they seem to have plenty of volume through the Onkyo. :thmbsp:

woah, very nice! It seems like the times when you say "I'm not buying another thing!" is when you find something irresistable...but that's a smokin' deal!

Wow, nice steal, er, deal man! :) I wonder if they sound similar to my NHT 2.5i's? (They have an 8" sidefiring woofer, 6.5" midrange/midbass and a 1" aluminum tweeter) Anyway, the one thing I have learned: extra power makes all the difference in the sound with this brand. :) Enjoy!

Those look really tippy, any plans for a base?

I believe they came with "out-riggers" which were two steel straps per speaker that kept them from tipping. Give them some juice and they should sound great. You may want to experiment with the woofers firing in provided you have the space.

Cool, thanks for the tip! I'm really pleased with them. Evidently, they have a very high WAF as well!

Also, regarding the bases I have the feet that came with them. I just removed them for transport so as to avoid impaling myself!

Very good deal! I thought NHT Model Ones I had were exceptional. As acoustic suspension speakers they want a lot of amp to open up. For towers like that I'd say 150 watt per channels separates if you really want to hear their full capability.

Thanks guys! It's safe to say I'm a fan. I was completely caught off guard. The stereo imagine and separation are fantastic. The transient response is very nice as well. Needless to say, I won't be selling these.

They can be bi-amped I believe. Crossover might be work to find, but I've read it helps a lot.

I'm very jealous. That's an amazing score. Congrats.

Yeah they can be bi-amped. Fortunately, NHT has .pdf copies of all of the manuals of their products. I'm hearing that NHT speakers like a lot of power. It's crazy to think that these can sound even better than they do already! I've only got them on an vintage Onkyo integrated with 70 wpc at 8 ohms (although it is an admittedly good sounding unit).
