NHT SuperTwo variants

Just picked up a pair of NHT “SuperTwo International”(s)serial #s 1111 and 1112. Have them hooked up to my Luxman r-1120...playing Joe Jackson’s Body and Soul

They seem to ask for a lot of power; however, for the price of a cheeseburger and beer so far I like them.

Several questions as I am trying to mai nail down some differences

1) although the jumpers are in place these are setup for bi-amp most of the ones spoke about via blogs, eBay, etc only have one set of banana jacks —. These are not that
2) my SuperTwos are a piano finish cream color...believe it would be considered blonde oak as it does show grain...they are in great shape not one scratch or mark of any kind I wouldn’t have thought so but they are sharp looking...cannot find any reference to this finish...even the downloaded manual say gloss/ piano black
3) trying to determine the approximate mfg date....planning to give these to my daughter so thought I would RE-cap first + others have mentioned some crossover mods which really involve changing this from 3 way to 2 way then driving the downfiring woofer separate, this is not practical for her ( or me) seems silly to drive a 6” woofer separate— wondering if there is another way to tweak the factory crossover since I’ll be in there anyway

I've never owned or even seen a pair of SuperTwos; they're a lot rarer than the SuperZero and SuperOne, although they obviously are out there. I do remember the review from Stereophile back when they were new. ISTM that biamping them would allow you to apply equalization to the subwoofer area, which in turn would probably alleviate some of the issues they complained about. However...if you're already happy with how they sound (plus the fact that you're planning on giving them to your daughter), I'd just leave it as-is. Stereophile's review was in 1999, so assume that as the probable earliest manufacture date. That being said, you may see little to no improvement with replacing the caps, unless you're just being proactive.

Do the connection plates have "NHT" embossed on them? Based on the serial number, yours appear to be a fairly early model. Maybe they changed it in later production runs? Or maybe a previous owner changed it.
 
Yes they are factory original for sure. I agree it likely doesn’t need to be RE-capped just yet — merely that I don’t want to give them to my daughter ( who lives several hundred miles away) only to find they need recapped 12 months from now... I thought I read NHT used electrolytic caps on some units, if that is the case for the SuperTwo and these are Circa 1998ish they might be getting to end of life not sure

My SuperTwo’s (3854,3855) which I bought new in 2000 also require a fair amount of power to open up, but do sound pretty good once you get them going. They are black. Yours are the first I’ve seen that aren’t black. Maybe someone changed the laminate? I have mine biwired to a Jolida Integated tube amp in the bedroom. They really sound great on tubes btw.
 
Just wrote an email to NHT in an effort to gain some product history. I know I saw somewhere the the SuperTwo International’s we available in a oak piano finish as well as black but cannot seem to relocate, I have attached another pic of the back — binding post, serial number, and label/model. I’ve seen other Internationals which match everything but the finish. Interesting and I am on a mission to get to the bottom of it. Again, appreciate any insight

The sticker looks to good to have been transferred so I’d say they’re original. Sadly you missed Ken Kantor who used to be a very helpful member on AK. I think he got tired of people telling him how they’d have done it better.
 
In the event there is interest, I heard back on my email to NHT. Per a production manager who was there for SuperTwo/SuperTwo International— they did make this variant as described... really quite rare, NHT made approximately 10 with this blonde oak piano finish. Fun thing to know for me!
 
I have a pair of the black SuperTwos. They are pretty nice considering the design limitations, and go lower than one would expect. The bass isn’t loose. It’s fast, but somewhat congested. This is more evident when listening to complicated music.

Great casual speaker for someone that is space constrained, and doesn’t want the hassle of setting up bookshelves and a sub.
 
I bought my SuperTwo’s (shielded) for the mains with SuperOnes for surrounds, a Center and a SubOne as a 5.1 package. My wife prefers them for their size in the bedroom. No complaints from me, especially since I have DQ-10’s in the living room.
