NIB (new in box) Fisher 400cx-2 how does that happen?

Do i keep this unused, or do i bring it up slow?

More gear than sense
New in box, no sign of it ever being plugged in. How does that happen? Some extraordinary circumstances to buy a preamp in 1963 and never plug it in. It baffles the mind.
While i sold a pristine 400cx-2 a while back which had rare use, i never thought i would find one in better shape. Let alone NIB.

Are you sure it was never used?

I've met folks obsessive about keeping packaging and keeping gear looking like new, so it looks unused but might have been heavily used, though well-preserved.

If it genuinely hasn't been used, I'd be careful to bring it up on a variac and/or dim-bulb tester at minimum -- and maybe test the electrolytic filter caps out-of-circuit -- as it will have original electrolytic filter capacitors that will very likely have dried out and need replacement.
 
If it really is NIB, unless you are truly going to use it enough to justify it, pass it on to someone else.
It will make someone else very happy to have a rare piece and you can use the, likely considerable, money toward something that will bring you pleasure daily.

Unless looking at the box on a shelf daily will bring you considerable pleasure. Sometimes it works like that.

Thank you for the concerns, well noted. I do understand.
Many signs, been doing this a long time. I know what you mean, and its with many minute signs i can say its never been used. Period. Hard to fathom i know, and this statement coming from someone other than myself i would question as well.
Here are the sighs i base my conclusion on:
1. Power cord. No scratches period.
2. Perfect lettering on chasis. I mean perfect.
3. Perfect inputs. All of them, identical and perfect. No sign of anything plugged in. (Rare in itself)
4. Perfect face. I mean...perfect.
5. Position and feel of all the knobs and switches.
6. The rest of the gear that came with it
7. The person it came from, and the tale of how and where it was discovered.
8. Tubes test new, all letters perfect.

Being a painter first, i can pay close attention to minute detail. Being an audio lover, ive never described anything as perfect before, or mint. Mint, can actually have marks, but from the factory like took marks or casting imperfections. So new in box is my description, which is indeed difficult to believe.
All that said, and my observations aside i have no real proof its unused.

I say use it, bring it up slowly and address any issues from it's 50+ year slumber. Then use it like the Fisher people meant for it to be, with good sources, amp & speakers so it can make music for you to enjoy.

Is it actually NIB? hard to say for sure, but ive seen a lot of units and the signs are all there. Still don't mean much, but does make my choice difficult to run it or leave it in the box.
Every time i say that, leaving it the box sounds more dumber and dumber..(incorrect use on purpose)

Thank you Mark! My amps are 300b Wavelength Audio and speaker Khorn. Not the first 400cx ive had, but still would be a shame leaving it in the box. Last one was still all stock. Bought a rebuild kit for it and never "needed" it. Though i gather it would have benefited from it. Thank you for the vote.

I was going to use it with this yard sale deck, didn't know this has it's own amp. Or anything else about audio at that age. Except I liked Baez.
