Nice little Martel FAX-200C receiver... early Rotel!

Is the FAX 200 a push pull EL84 or single ended like my FAX 150?
I believe this is a push pull, from what I've read about the 6BM8 tubes,IMG_0855.JPG but I could be completely wrong, so if anyone out there can correct me feel free to do so. I am using it as my learning amp/receiver. I am relatively new to this stuff and it fascinates me to no end. So far I have been lucky with my "fix it and sell it" purchases but I chose this one because it looks like a beast. This is a present overhead shot. New caps are on their way. So here's a newbee question what are those 8 metallic rectangular pieces in the center?

I don't have one but i have a schematic which shows PP output tubes. 99% of the time, if you see 4 output tubes it will be push pull amp. The metal pieces are the tuning coils for the radio . Dont mess with them.

Hello Everyone, I found this beauty (Martel FAX 200 C) on CL.. I probably paid more than I wanted for something untested but I like challenges and he included a couple old crusted over amps that I couldn't resist. The Martel was pretty caked and an entire can of deoxit cleared that away in pretty short order. After a painstaking cleanup I fired her up and the old familiar 60 cycle hum. I replaced a visibly drying can capacitor with a nice little 8 pin 3 capacitor, cluster technique I learned from one of my guru YouTube guys. I realise all those Greys have to go and I am in the process. I also found that a 60 cycle hum can be caused by a faulty tube so now I'm searching for a good tube tester. I am also looking to a shielding technique. Let the journey begin.View attachment 963462 View attachment 963462 View attachment 963463

However... for the love of God does anyone know where I can get a schematic for this thing?

Here is a scan I got somewhere here in a thread (I don't remember which one). Thanks to the original poster of the pic.

Thank you so much. Especially for not being a D-bag with your response. I opened one up (metal pieces) from a totally destroyed tuner that I scrapped for parts and the copper coil led me to believe that it would have something to do with the radio.

From the responses I have been given here it is a push pull config. This thing is a beast as far as the designers craming everything in there but it is a great learning platform for me. I will be recapping it and it looks like I may get away with only having to buy One 12AX7 and One 6BM8. The preamp is a trouble spot and hopefully once everything is set up I will have a nice little tube amp.

You will. Those 6BM8 tubes sound nice and are favored in Japan.

I have Martel FAX-200 and mine tubes are ECL82, though they are not the same as 6BM8 but looks like can be sometimes interchanged.

Wattage unknown - no manuals, no specs, no schematic available anywhere. Monacor 300 schematic included above is not the same as Martel FAX-200: radio modules look exactly the same with same tubes, but last stage of amp schematic is different and tubes 6BM8 are different - my tubes are ECL82, and they are not exact replacements for ECL82. Also output transformers are different: Monacor's are OT-200 and Martel's are OT-210, power schematic and power transformer are different: Martel's power transformer is PT-210.
After major restoration
(2 tubes 12AX7: 1 shorted and 1 filament exausted, intertube's capacitors were leaking 0.05 mf etc, resistors greatly changed value, and I did, but probably should not change small electrolytic and power supply's capacitors - I am not sure if they were bad, but they are still there and later I will check them)
I tried with oscilloscope to find out max output power with 1 kHz sinus signal - at each channel with loads of 8 ohm resistor - before decent distortions (? 1%-2% ?, but you can't hear them anyway) were appearing and it is looks like power is about 10 watts at each channel, but with both loads simultaneously it is decreasing to 6 watts.
Then I tested Martel with my Sansui SP-3000 5-way speakers and it sounded wonderful. Unfortunately I don't have high quality music source. I have Sony 400 CD Player and I tested it with decent CDs: instrumental music, jazz, rock. It took about 2 hours because I compared its sound with my Denon AVR-800 amp which I had for many years. I tested in 2 modes: with all Bass and Trebles in the mid positions and with all Bass and Trebles in the max positions.
Result: Denon sounded little muffled and Martel sounded clear and transparent and its basses were good too. Also I raised Martel's power and it was very very loud, but not to maximum because I did not want to disturb senior neighbors and also because I was afraid to damage Martel itself because I did not think those 6 watts could be so loud - and now I am sure those 6 watts per channel on paper diaphragm speaker (not compression speakers with foam, plastic, or other than paper ring at edges) can do that because I remember that in my country I had same kind of speakers (Simphonia-003) with nominal power 6 watts and I could not listen them at full power too - extremely loud. Anyway, I still believe that max output power of each channel with load on both channels should be at least 10 watts, so something is not quite right with my amp and I still trying to find out that, though I am ready to stop it because even current power is enough for me.

Unfortunately for finishing my work I don't have schematic for Martel FAX-200 and I believe many people interested in that too. So, I believe all we - may be even 4-10 persons - could help us ourselves: each of us could draw small part of schematic off its own Martel-200 amp and then we assemble all pieces of schematic together and each of us, instead of wasting time on Internet search, will get good schematic without spending huge amount of time on drawing whole schematic himself. Besides, as I noticed radio part is the same as Monacor's 300 (and that is almost 40-50% of whole schematic), so there is left only front panel (with a few switches, pots, etc.), pre-amp with 3 tubes, last stage amp with 4 tubes, power supply, back panel, and interconnections between modules. So, it will not take much for everyone off 4-10 persons team to do that. If anybody think he/she does not have special electronic knowledge for that it is wrong - you need only follow conductors between parts and pins and to draw by hand (not important how you draw it) ends of those parts. You will number yourself all parts of your partial schematic (for example round orange=1, brown cylinder=2, etc. and don't worry we will help you - we have the same parts, or we will follow your picture - anyway it is not problem. Real problem - desire and time). And by the way, it is good start for introducing to electronics.

So, guys, what do you think? Let us do that together.

They are completely equivalent and fully interchangable. See http://www.r-type.org/exhib/abp0024.htm

Why don't you make a start with drawing part yourself?

I am working on the martel 200 - and yes I have PT210 and OT210 output transformers.
Mine has a funky volume knob rattly and weakfish sound, and has a 60v hum.
In addition one tube seems to be red plating very very quickly.
The chassis is also sort of in corroded and crappy shape.
I am looking to do a swap over to a modern PCB - can someone point me to an amp kit that might work.

Here is some pics of what mine looks like - as well as the redplating tube.

Thanks.
Srinath.

Change the old capacitors, clean it up... you'll get it working.

I currently am missing most of my tools (living in 2 cities will do that to ya) - and I should confess, I don't have the brains. However swapping caps is not that much of a brainy task. Cos I swap stuff all the time LOL and I wasn't any smarter few yrs ago either.
I'll be collecting up my tools again and shoot for this in a few weeks.
You guys are very good at getting me to punch well above my weight. I understand 1/10th and I still fix 1000's of stuff.

Many of us have the same experience. It's the power of the community here.

Forgive me for reviving an old thread, but did anyone find schematics for this unit? Just bought one off of Fleabay. Looks to be untouched. I'm new to the whole restore-a-50-year-old receiver thing and I'm looking for basic guidance going forward. The seller doesn't know much about equipment. He said he was able to listen to the FM section through headphones, so I know it's at least turning on and outputting sound. I'm guessing it will need to be recapped and deox'ed. Thanks for any help!

Mine is a FAX 150 which is mostly original except for new tubes and some replaced orange drops. These receivers came with a metal cage but when I bought mine it was missing. The case pictured here is a diy. Some units were labeled Martel and some Rotel. They are the same except for the name.

Hoping someone can tell me what the cap value is in the picture? Mine is missing the cap completely. Also, does anyone have a picture zoomed into this area so I know the exact points the cap needs to go to? Thanks and keeping my fingers crossed....

That cap in the outline looks like a PIO , paper in oil, type with a metal case, and not usually original to this Japanese made amp. So, if it is grounded to the chassis it maybe there to help block certain high frequency noise in the AC line. But that is a guess from where it is located, next to the power transformer. But, using a more purpose designed capacitor for this role would be better.

I tried out a 4.7uF 450V cap. Negative side to ground and she smoked and popped when I got the variac up to 80V.
There's another picture of it (looks original) in the first post in this thread but I can't zoom in and see what the value is and exactly where she goes.
