Today's (March 19th) edition of the WSJ page W2, has a nice, albeit short, review of current roots music, or Americana, artists.
The article highlights some favorites around here to the likes of me, Dave918, Alan, and tentoze (and others I'm sure). The article gives a short review of:
The Flatlanders "Wheels of Fortune"
Tift Merritt "Bramble Rose"
Tarbox Ramblers "A Fix Back East"
Slaid Cleaves "Wishbones"
and
Carrie Newcomer "Betty's Diner"
I can personally recommend The Flatlanders & Tift Merritt. I know at least one of the other artists, Slaid Cleaves, just got added to my buy list (just when I thought it was shrinking for a change). The article describes Cleaves as "a Texas-based singer-songwriter, recalls the work of Lyle Lovett and Steve Earle, but with his own acerbic style." Sounds good to me.
He has a web site I'm going to check out: www.slaidcleaves.com
