Nice surprise from a JVC receiver

Okay, I have sweared off JVC stuff since the early 90's. I bought some lo-fi JVC receivers thinking they looked good but IMO they sounded horrible. That is when I found H/K and life went on, til now. A friend I trade audio with from time to time had a JVC RX-750v. Again not big on black face stuff but the 80's had its fair share of decent amps and receivers but also just as many stinkers. He said just try it, I am glad I did. Has a very powerful, flat sound to it which I am getting use to, I like a little color in my sound. Seems to be well built with large JVC caps and transformer. I wonder if the caps are actually JVC or Elna branded?:scratch2: I was a little suspect of the claimed 0.007 THD but I have to say it sounds pretty clean. I will take more pics when its cleaned up.

100 watts per channel, min. RMS, both channels driven into 8 ohms, from 20Hz to 20kHz with no more than 0.007% total harmonic distortion.

Tried uploading pics but its not working right now.

Sorry guys, having pic uploading problems tonight. It says this receiver has a Super A amp. Anyone know what that is, if anything. Still like the sound of it though. :music:

:lurk: Gonna' hang out for this one. Did a search and tried to find any pictures at all online, but no luck (I did find your thread though - Google's fast :D).

Maybe similar in sound to the Pioneer VSX-5300 I used back in my twenties. Big, heavy beast of a receiver, BPC or not. I can't even remember what those black receivers sounded like because it's been 20 years since I've used one. There WERE some diamonds-in-the-rough though, and this is probably one of them. $500 wasn't cheap in 1987.

Thanks for the info Gang-Twanger. It is pretty heavy and has the power. My Nova 7b's can handle about a third volume and I don't go higher to risk damaging them. Really clear sound. All the H/K stuff I have had before were warm sounding to me. This is very clear, neutral. I am pleased.:D:music::music:
 
If you like a little color and warmth, you should keep an eye out for something from the early solid-state era. Easy to spot. Refined-looking with great WAF (wife-affirmation-factor), not too-many knobs, and CHEAP (like $5-50 cheap). Very-well-built too. Lots of choices. Sansui, Sherwood, H/K (the OLD H/K), Sony, Kenwood, etc. Marantz and McIntosh too, but they can get a little pricey. They didn't have huge powerhouses like in the late '70's because in the late '60's to early '70's they were still trying to emulate tubes, and they didn't NEED much power (and they're the most-tubelike solid-state receivers you're gonna' find - I think the low-powered stuff sounds better than the later, powerhouse receivers). But in those days, 50 watts MEANT 50 watts. And tons of those receivers are still working today after 50 years (Say THAT about any receiver from 'BESTnotBUY').

I've heard the 'Super-A' thing mentioned before, but I can't remember where I heard it.

I have a JVC, but it's one of those post-millenium, all-in-one units. Decent-sounding for what it is though - WAY-better than anything else they had at Wal-Mart (even the more-expensive stuff). It just can't take much bumping around like the old stuff. Lots of plastic. I think the model was mx-gb5. It sold for about $250 back in like '03. It served it's purpose. Back then, I thought it was awesome, but then I picked up a pair of early '70's Wharfedale speakers and a cheap, ultra-entry-level Rotel receiver from the mid-'70's, and that stuff quickly-brought me back to reality...

I have a RX-999v.(1989)Second from totl and I think it sounds fantastic!Every Super A amp I heard sounds good.

I got a JVC RX-6500v at the salvation army for 10 bucks. 100w per channel and I use it in my garage system. It sounds pretty good an can get very loud. I have had it for 5 years now and it just keeps going.
 
nice unit for sure. I picked up a jvc integrated for 25$ to keep me going while my sae amp and pre get a full resto, I have much respect for jvc

Picked this up off ebay...Overpaid, but the digital display didn't work...which doesn't matter to me...it's for cassettes and records.
I emailed the seller and told her I was going to send it back...she discounted it 60%.
JVC R-X350V...55 watts...THD 0.007%...with the right speakers...JBL...SOUNDS GREAT.
Cost me $35.
 
Arguing with a guy right now...he believes SEA stands for Sound Effect Equalizer

I say it means Stereo Equalizer Amplifier

The old literature backs him up...but it's fun to argue.

Like arguing with people about Lamborghini Diablo Headlights.
Yeah...I know it's a Nissan 300ZX.

I'm guessing that my RX-350BK is a similar design to this, although the front panel is arranged differently. It too is black with the equalizer controls & digital display and has remained a solid performer through the years since I bought it new way back when. It has always been plugged into my stereo system even though the system has evolved considerably over time. Since it continues to work great, I have no plans to get rid of it, even though I did purchase another new receiver relatively recently.
