Title pretty much says it all. I purchased a nikko alpha 230 power amp off marketplace as is since it seemed to be in very good shape and not abused but when I tried to turn it on at home instantly the protect light went on. I checked visually if there were any burnt resistors and fuses but no dice. I’ve never worked on power amps or even Nikko gear in general so if anyone has any idea where to check next I’m all ears. As always any and all input is appreciated.

How did you check the fuses? With a multimeter? Looks can be deceiving.
Just been eyeballing everything so far. Haven’t touched anything yet I was afraid touching something i shouldn’t since the power supply is gigantic so I’m sure it’ll give a very nasty shock. I was looking for any pointers before going in blind
I just turned it back on to test them when I heard a hissing sound from what i assume was the transformer and all of a sudden the relay clicked and the protect mode went off. The owner had it in a storage facility for quite some time and i did only have it on for about 7-8 minutes after bringing it in from freezing weather outside. Could it have been that?
Its the big ass caps that will bite.
I followed the schematic and a couple threads i found on the power amp. I’m still going to give everything a once over but i think I’ll let everything properly heat up first before measuring anything
Power switch perhaps. Or a bad solder connection.

Might be dirty switches because it is absolutely covered in dust. I’ll give everything a good cleaning and check again
Good time to look for obvious broken solder connections.
I gave everything a very careful check and i found two semi-broken solder joints in the speaker connectors. Looks like they could have been touching. I’m assuming that’s what caused the protect mode. I also looked at the schematic and looked at a few threads to measure everything with a multimeter and it all looks good. The amp plays great now, i’ve been running it for about 3 hours now and have had zero issues other than that it runs a little hot which i’ve read is normal for this amp. I appreciate the help, these will definitely power my KSA speakers like a champ.
