Yeah, now I've got the five stereos set up here. The baby of the bunch is the Nikko NR-1015 at 85 wpc.
I have kept the Nikko, despite my penchant for TOTL models, because it just sounds good, as good as any receiver I've heard in its range, and better than the rest. It is also a good-looking thing, and it is free from imperfections that I can see (or perhaps can't see, eh).
Last week I did some major hoisting and moving of speaker systems, and now have the Nova 8B perched atop the Advent Loudspeaker. With the Advents on the floor, the Nova 8B really sounds much better, and with better and deeper bass response. Mids and highs are also better from the Nova 8B.
Yes, having the Advent on the floor doesn't help things, but even when THEY were atop the Marantz DS-900, they didn't sound as good as the Nova 8B are sounding. Hey, know that I do like the Advent, they are a good speaker system, astounding at their price.
The Nova 8B is a clone of the AR-3a, and that is what the sound I'm hearing from Led Zeppelin reminds of--yes it was a LONG time ago I last heard AR-3a, but I remember how much I was impressed by them through many, many listening sessions at my friend's apartment back in college daze.
What I'm thrying to say is that this system sounds darn good, and as I begin my little birthday soiree I am listening to the #5 stereo and just flat out enjoying the sound. Takes me back to a time when things seemed so important, kinda like they do today, but a time in the cocoon of academia. It was also a time when stereos were as important as having a cool car, and we had many "stereo acquaintances" who we knew through our stereos and hanging out and er listening to stereos and discussing the pressing issues of the day, dope and the Vietnam war, mainly.
Back to the Nikko and the Nova 8B. They are 30 years old, and I hadn't had them in a system for 4 or 5 years. I am surprised and impressed by their sound, I had just forgot home well they performed. Solid, deep and musical bass--Bonham's foot on the bass pedal pounding away is great, and of course the rest of the band sounds good, too. I've got the stereo set like it often was back in college: loudness on, bass to one o'clock and treble to 2 o'clock. The 85 wpc Nikko is bigger (and 5 years newer) than my wonderful 54 wpc TOTL SX-828, and the speakers sound probably better than the great CS-88A I had then.
Any way, I'm having fun tonight even though I've broken my glasses and have to wear old ones til tomorrow.
