Nikko nr-800

Hi,

I am looking for some thoughts on a NIKKO NR-800.

All I could find was it was an early 80's NIKKO (the quartz lock tuner should have clued me in before I tried google). It is rated at 50w.

What could you compare it to sound-wise?

I have noted here NIKKO has many friends and admirers. I remember the thread a couple of weeks ago featuring receivers people thought were handsome and such - somebody put up a black-faced NIKKO that was gorgeous and they said it sounded as good as it looked.

Did NIKKO fall to the 80's like others?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks

John

A lot of '80s gear was designed well, having good power supplies and amp sections. I've not seen the inside of a Nikko NR-800. If you own it, post some pics of the inside.

Alas I do not own one (yet). I am waiting for the owner/seller to get back to me with answers to the usual questions (do the push buttons function, the lights work, etc...).

When I got and look at it, I will take some pictures of the inside.

Very silver.

I am wondering (and forgot to ask) if the buttons/dials/knobs are plastic or metal? I am hoping for metal but figure they are plastic.

I know there is gear from the 80's that is amazing. I am just sifting through to discover it.

Thanks for all the replies and the links.

I have dutifully gone through them. There sure are some gorgeous NIKKO's out there.

I remember in one of the forums somebody saying that NIKKO made a ton of models - I think the the NIKKO NR-800 must have been one of many. I have had a hard time finding even a picture of it lit up.

The NR-800 has that early 80's look. I cannot tell if the dials and push buttons are metal or plastic.

I figure rightly or wrongly, push buttons jam up easier than dials (but I suppose it depends on the manufacturer/designer). So I have a bias there.

I was intrigued about NIKKO after seeing the pictures of the black faced 501 (I think it was) and hearing how much people liked them.

Here is the ad - wow look at all those buttons...

I am waiting on answers from the seller.

Thanks again for the information and replies. I sure appreciate tapping into the global knowledge here.

John

P.S. I know it is only $40.00 - I guess I am being persnickety about the human engineered push button ease (straight from the brochure currently on Ebay) - if I get it I will post pictures galore

I know this is an old post, but still worth mentioning. Unlike the US midfi market of the 80's, Japan was primarily an audiophile market. Nikko was very popular in Japan and subsequently made a run at the US market. Unfortunately the equipment was a little too pricey for the US consumer – albeit very high quality.
