No Auto return on turntable?

So...

I love my Tannoy / Micro seiki TM55DD, its beautiful, its wonderful sounding, best TT I ever had.

But, there's one thing: It does not seem to have Auto return once the side comes to its end. Previous TT's I had, used to have auto return, while this one gets stuck at the end forcing me to get up from my seat.

The question: am I missing something here? Is it possible to have this TT raise its arm at the end of a side, or perhapse even Auto return?

From what I've been able to learn online, the TM55DD does have auto return. You may be able to repair it using a manual for a similar Micro Seiki model.

Mmmm...never heard of it but looked it up now - http://www.thequp.com/ - looks simple, which is good.
Does it ever miss?
How easy is installation?

I've never had it miss you just have to get it tuned in so that your tonearm hits it at the right spot. Installation is very simple like i said its just a matter of fine tuning the position. doesn't take more than a few minutes.

There's one for sale on eBay. The seller, who claims to have used the turntable on a daily basis so I'd expect him to be familiar with its features. He describes it as being "manual auto start/stop/return". The description is a little unclear, even ambiguous, but it does give one a little hope.

Heh...
If its manual, how can it be auto? o_O
I think the guy meant to say something else.

Unfortunately, the description makes perfect sense if you remove the word "auto".

On some turntables with a mechanical auto return (as opposed to one that uses an auxilliary motor, you can see part of the return mechanism by removing the platter, for instance, a plastic gear pressed onto the spindle. It's a shame we don't know what Micro Seiki turntable, if any, the Tannoy is a clone of. I found this in an old AK thread.

The Tannoy/Micro TM55DD combines handsome looks and high performance into one impressive package. Built in a combined effort by Tannoy Limited of England and Micro Seiki Company of Japan, the TM55DD uses a brushless DC Servo motor with electronic speed control to achieve high accuracy and low wow, flutter, and rumble figures (see Specifications). The tonearm system in the TM55DD has the most compliant pivot assembly of any tonearm on the market today, giving superior tracking ability even with high -compliance cartridges. Other features included as standard equipment are an illuminated stroboscope etched onto the massive turntable platter, viscous -damped cueing, a newly -designed anti -skating adjustment, a beautiful and functional solid wood base, a hinged tinted dust cover, height-adjustible shock absorbing feet, and even a bubble level built into the base to help make sure the turntable is properly level for maximum performance. The impressive new Tannoy/Micro TM55DD - it's a lot of turntable. You'll find it at audio associates, the hi-fi stereo center.

- Specifications - Speeds : 331/3 and 45 RPM
Speed Adjustment: ±6% (half a musical pitch)
Wow and Flutter: less than 0.04% WRMS
Rumble: better than 60 dB down
Tracking Force Range: 0-3 grams
$330 audio associates

Doesn't look like it has auto return.

AHA!

It's a Micro Seiki DD-5E!

Ignore the picture on the VE page. Download the Owner's Manual and all will be made clear.

Tears in my yes! :(
There I was, thinking that...ohh well. I guess the Q-Up Tonearm lifter it is after all.
Thanks John - you helped me a lot.

Manual TTs will not return the arm to rest. Many manual tts don't even stop the platter. What you are asking for is a semi automatic TT. My vintage TT, Garrard DD75, is a manual table but has a feature that stops the platter and cues the arm off the record at the end of the record. The tt won't return the arm to rest, however.

That type is called an auto stop or auto shut-off turntable.
