No more maytag!!!!

I bought a house 8 years ago and have been replacing the appliances (Most are original.)

I bought a used Maytag washer dryer approximately 6 years old to replace the 30 year old originals, and a refrigerator about 8 years old (Side by Side and dirt cheap!).

These are the ONLY Maytags in the house and ALL are giving me crap!!

Refrigerator has had a "defrost relay" replaced twice now, due to be replaced again! :sigh: When it goes it no longer cools and buzzed like an angry hornets nest.

Washer has been repaired twice already..I am amazed at how CHEAP these things are made these days! Now it stalls mid cycle darn near every time!! I come back hours later and it's sitting there full of dirty water and I have to start the cycle over again and babysit it so I can make sure it goes through the whole cycle.

Dryer has been somewhat ok, just the timer has crapped out as well as the sensor circuit....I have to run it manually for approx. 40 minutes....

Keep in mind these ALL replaced 25-30 year old units...

[END RANT]

I am open to suggestions for replacements....

My Maytag washer would skip cycles so I had to go check on it every now and then and wind the timer back so that it would go to rinse or whatever. Finally got a new timer/clock for it and that fixed it. About $90. Before that, it would wash but then not spin. Took a while to figure that out but it was the cam on the bottom of the transmission pulley that was sticking. All new parts there, about $90 again.

Tons of trouble with a Maytag dishwasher so I finally pitched it and got a Whirlpool.

Whirlpool fridge too and I'm sticking with them - I think Whirlpool is the only USA company left.

Another good name brand that's gone to crap.
Remember the commercials about the Maytag repairman, being.....the loneliest guy in town?
I think he's the Maytag QC guy now, and is sleeping one off in the plant utility closet.........................................

I've had good luck with General Electric major appliances. The GE top-loading washer I bought in 1985 was still running perfectly when I donated it in 2002. Its replacement, a Whirlpool top-loader, barely made it through its two-year warranty before it broke down and flooded my laundry room with a mix of water, detergent and chlorine bleach. The Whirlpool ended up at the curb and was replaced with another GE top-loader, which has given no trouble at all.

The GE gas dryer that I bought in 1985 needed an igniter and a drive belt in 17 years of use. The Whirlpool dryer that replaced it runs well, but the paint finish on the top cover has not held up. It's down to bare metal in multiple places. Not my idea of how a quality appliance should last.

My Amana dishwasher, made by GE in the Louisville plant, is on its last legs at 21 years in service. That's about double its design life. I'm planning to buy an American-made GE to replace it. (They do still build a few product lines at Louisville, including the dishwashers; I asked when I was shopping this past weekend.) I'll probably look to GE when it's time to replace my side-by-side refrigerator/freezer, a GE product that's needed two defrost relays and a replacement ice maker in 26 years of use.

If I recall correctly, Whirlpool now owns Maytag...

An appliance repairman of my acquaintance told me several years ago that the days of 20+ year lifespans for appliances are over. 10 years is the standard now.

I've had good luck with Whirlpool and Kenmore/Whirlpool and Amana appliances. Decided to pay up for a Miele dishwasher and just about fell in love with the thing. They're all at my former home with the ex right now, they're all about 15 years old and still going strong.

I've replaced the heating element in my Maytag dryer twice, and one of the heat sensors.

I could keep repairing it forever. A lot cheaper than a new one.

The very latest estimates (2010 manufacture) for consumer grade durable goods is now closer to 8 years of course dependent on use. Factor in a few premium brands and you might get close to 10 I guess.

Cleaning your fridge coils twice yearly will help it last longer. Especially if you have pets. Leave room around it for air circulation also. I can't tell you anything on cheap relay parts that will help though.

Not overloading the washer and dryer helps plastic parts and bearings last longer.

You either have to pay for premium brands or baby the commonly sold stuff and expect to change them out sooner than you'd like.

Again this is the reality for goods sold today as opposed to even 10-15 years ago. They are usually more energy efficient though. Not factoring in the materials and energy used in constantly building replacements. Hopefully they will be recycled for scrap most of the time.

My sis has an expensive Maytag set about the same age as yours. The washer got so bad that they leave the cover off of it (it’s in a basement). All the guts are fully exposed to make it easier for her husband to fix it!

Our Kenmores have been working for more then a decade now well worth the money.

Kenmore was always my go-to brand for appliances, but heard that Sears has a different company building some of their units now.
It really ticks me off when I have to keep buying something over and over, when they use to last a generation.

I believe Whirlpool makes Kenmore products IIRC. A lot of rebranding nowadays.
