Hi
Looking for some help:

1) Tips to hooking untested receivers and speakers.
2) Simple trouble shooting on receivers with light, signal, and no sound.
3) Simple trouble shooting on receiver with lights, no signal, and no sound.
4) Simple trouble shooting, no lights, no signal, and no sound.

I know nothing about electronics. Nothing.

How do you make caps safe to work around (discharge)?

I would say this is the least of your concerns especially for someone who "knows nothing about electronics"

I would take a step back and figure out your priorities as to what it is you're hoping to accomplish. Were you're being serious you purchased over 40 amps, 20 pair of speakers in various states of working/not working yet you know nothing about them?

Yes Sir I bought a truck load of gear. I fell off the deep end bidding on ebay and goodwill auctions ( could not stop, it was just to much)
Yes I know nothing about electronics. I know I love the blues, I know I'm going to learn enough about electronics to keep from killing myself or another set of speakers.

I guess I stubbed my toe, when I shared to much when I first sighed on here.

In the upper right corner of your screen there should be an "inbox" for messages.

You have a bunch of nice vintage equipment to play with and learn how to approach repairs. Since it seems you're starting from ground zero I'd start testing the least valuable piece so you don't cause irreversible damage on something important. The "power off while working" suggestion helps prevent personal injury. I don't know much about electronic design but maybe others here who do can recommend some good books on the subject. I'd be tempted to get one of the "electronics for dummies" books but I have no idea if they're good or not.
 
Thanks, my cuz Timmy added outlets in garage when I bought my house. 20 years later when I plug somethin in sparks fly. I need to get a good surge protector .so much to learn. Watched a lot of videos on YouTube. One I found interesting was building a bench top power supply out of a old computer power supply. And there bunch on building simple amps. I bought Paul McGowan Audiophiles guide, it arrived today. I'm going to check it out tonight, well thanks for the input. There are so good people here.

l think the natural is shorting out against the switch.
thinking about upgrading the switches to 25 amp switches.
