I'm not too tolerant of stupid mistakes...ESPECIALLY WHEN I MAKE 'EM!
Thus far I have done a re-cap (the major caps) in a Pioneer sx-780. I have re-veneered the case in maple, layering the recessed top with three layers of maple to make the top surface level with the side shoulders resulting in a perfectly smooth top, removed and sprayed the grill in gloss black and put five coast of lacquer on the case. The sx-780 was otherwise perfect on the face so I thought it was worth the effort...plus I had the fun, right? And the resulting case looks fabulous...it is really, really nice.
As this was planned as a gift and would be in a room with a lot of blond wood and large windows I thought that maple was right the right tone ...you know, a bit of wood contrast but not too dark (i.e. so not walnut, right?).
Then I secured a pair of Paradigm 9se and fully refurbished those, also in maple ...they are looking very nice ...new grill cloth, new veneer, five coats of lacquer and even new badges direct from Paradigm. Looking very nice indeed....all matching with the receiver case.
What is missing.... Well, Paradigms can't just sit on the floor, so I get some 3/4" particle board and build some stands ... not quite finished yet but all the construction is done and the veneer won't be too bad, plus I have lots of maple.
Now a TT...what to do...just clean up an oak plinth or actually try my hand at building one.... Hum, I will think on that.
All this for a gift.
Seems pretty good right? Except for the foreshadowing of that title line...! But whatever could go wrong??
Well, I'll tell you. I posted a while back that when I got the sx-780 at the same time I also got a sx-3700. The sx-3700 had some blemishes on the face, not awful, but there, hence I was gifting the sx-780. BUT being an efficient kind of person I veneered both cases at the same time so I could spray the lacquer at the same time, saves double clean-up etc. Now, interestingly, in case (no play on words!) you didn't know, the two receivers sx-780 and sx-3700 are the same wattage and have the identical case ... Well, ALMOST but not quite identical cases.... you don't really notice the minor difference in the height of the shoulders when you are working on the cases... and I put the maple on the sx-3700 and walnut on the sx-780! Damn, double damn, triple damn, S _ _ T !
And because I layered up the veneer on the top I think it will be pretty hard to fix the case for the sx-780 ... Not just 'suck it up and re-veneer it' ... I will have to put a thin vertical ring of maple veneer around the top metal vent because with three layers of walnut there it will show up as a dark circle if I just plunk some maple on all the flat surfaces...
Come on... I think I well deserve an "I'm a dumbass" forum...
EDITED NOTE: If you read this post AND have an sx-780, please PM me.
