No Sterio on Phono

Hello,

I have a troubeshooting question regarding the inability to get sound in both speakers.

Background: I gave my son my old system from high school to have and he set it up. The system consists of the following:
  • Turntable: Technics SL 1360
  • Receiver: Nakamichi TA-2A
  • Speakers: Two sonos stereo speakers
  • Connections: The Sonos speakers are connected via aux in on a Sonos hub to the headphone jack on the Nakamichi. The cable is stereo cable.
What works:
  • The tuner delivers stereo sound
  • The technics turntable works in stereo when connected to my other sound system which is a Mcintosh and B&W setup.
  • The VHS machine delivers to both speakers when plugged into the phono jacks in the Nakamichi
What doesn't work:
  • The technics turntable only delivers to one speaker when plugged into the phono ports in the back of the Nakamichi. The speaker changes when the RCA plugs are reversed
Can someone help me with ideas on what to try next to determine the issue?

Thank you.

Check and see if the Nakamichi has some cracked solder connections on the phono jacks in question.

When you connect the technics tt to the Mcintosh, do you use the same cable interconnect as when you connect to the Nakamichi?

Yes, the interconnects are the same as they are hard wired into the technics... I appreciate your help.

Check and see if the Nakamichi has some cracked solder connections on the phono jacks in question.

The solders look good. When connecting the VHS to the Phone jacks, we get sound out of both speakers. It is only when the turntable is connected to the Nakamichi that only one speaker works. The turntable works fine on my system which is a Mcintosh and B&W combo... Thanks for your help.

Wow, strange problem.

Look closely at the rca jacks coming from the tt. I'm wondering whether the outer connection (this is for the shielding) is NOT making good contact on the Nakamichi.

Sometimes you can just press those outer contacts together so that they go on tighter and make better contact.

Regards,
Jerry

One thing to add, we connected studio quality headphones (audio technic ATT M50X) directly into the Sono when the turntable is connected to the Nakamichi. It appears the signal is just very light to the left channel rather than none existent. Is there a setting on the Nakamichi that boosts signal on the turntable?

sound swapping swapping rca on phono says amp is ok and record deck is not .
i suggest one rca at a time be plugged into left and right on amp .

We repeated the trouble shooting and the connection to the McIntosh had the same issue. My son and I are certain it worked on the first go around.

Anyway, the issue is a bad RCA out of the turntable. We are in Oklahoma City. What type of place fixes something like this?

Thanks all.
