Noise in the C2200 phono section?

My C2200 is a little noisy in the phono mode. If the volume is turned up to about 45 to 50 there is an apparent backround noise. This happens whether the phono is hooked up or unplugged from the pre amp. The McChinese originals are in use. The other inputs on the pre amp are free of noise at all levels. Could this be noisy tubes or just normal phono section noise?:scratch2:

Thanks,
Robert

At those volume levels and with the phono stage turned on, I'd expect to hear a bit of noise. Remember that you've got another 40dB or so of gain from the other inputs. This will raise the noise levels a bit.

If you're getting the same amount of noise (low level hiss, right?) from both channels, then you're ok. If, however, one channel is noticably higher than the other, then this is reason to check that channel out.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

David

This is probably normal.

If you hear the noise over the music, if the noise is not constant, or if the noise is different in one channel compared to the other, then you may have a problem.

I had a noise in my pre-amp section and new tubes fixed it right up. If the problem is in one channel, switch the left and right tubes. If the problem moves, then the problem is the tubes. Also, make sure that there is no grounding problem or wire issue with your table and tonearm, check the connections to the cartridge too. When you switch the left and righ tubes, if the problem does not move, then it is probably in your table or cartridge.

I had the same problem with my C220...

Pulled the stock tubes and put in EH tubes...which I use and like in my EAR834....but not the C220....

They were also not to my liking (too hissy)....dropped in a pair of Sovtek LPS and everything quieted down AND sounded much more alive and seemingly gave me more gain.
