Non-Working Dual 1009 TT Worth It?

I've been looking for a better turntable than the cheap plastic Ion USB turntable I currently have. I found a Dual 1009 TT that, according to the ad, "will not turn on." I have heard that the old Duals have issues with the grease in the motor hardening over time. Now, I am OK at solving electrical issues and I'm a pretty good wrench when it comes to mechanical issues. The seller is asking $50.

My questions are:

1: Is the Dual 1009 a decent entry level turntable (better than the plastic Ion TT I have now) or should I hold out for something else?
2: Is a non-working unit worth the asking price?
3: If not, what should I offer?

It doesnt take much to beat an Ion.
A 1009 is a pretty old tt. Non working? Im not so sure Id throw 50 at that. There may be more than a hardened grease issue at hand. If the idler is bad (rock hard rubber tire) its gonna run you maybe another 50 or so before its over. I dont see where that deck is worth a huge gamble imho. If it were a 1019 or a1219/29, Id say dig in.
I would figure about 1/2 that money depending on cosmetics.
Gotta tell you the truth though, 50 bucks could get you a respectable turnkey tt. Just saying, but if you want a project, then thats a whole other story.

In a word...No.
Amongst my 7 or 8 TTs I have a cosmetically very nice, perfectly working 1009 and cannot fit it into my daily system even though I fully appreciate its qualities. Given that I live in the wilds of Tasmania and cannot be considered to be trying to sell on AK I would have no hesitation in taking $50 for it. To be quite honest, unless you are familiar with TTs, taking on a non working one is just asking for expensive trouble. Do yourself a favour and pass on this offer as I have no doubt a better opportunity will present whether it's via AK or another medium. As usual this is just my ever so humble opinion. :thmbsp:

I just fixed one of those. I wouldn't spend $50 on a non-working example, but I'm a cheap bastich.
