Hello,

what an awesome and informative site!

quick intro, I have been into home audio since I was 12 with a Fisher all in one, can't remember the model now! Currently I made a nice score twice in one day, at least the equipment seems ok so far.
my question is basically a two part open one. First, what are some thoughts on a Technics SA-8000x? I had a guy at work say he was going to throw it away, so I took it home and gave it a Deoxit bath, waited over night and put it all back together and plugged in my Pioneer CS-G403's to test.
Second what are some thoughts on a Zenith MC-7040 from the original owner. same situation. It was going to the land fill and ended up in my trunk instead.

both are functioning and now driving said Pioneers. these will also each get a turn with my Altec 315's once some replacement parts get here. So far I like the sound of the Zenith with rock and the Technics for blues.
any feed back on the above receivers would be much appreciated!

Welcome

I've moved this thread over here into General Audio because the Introduction Forum is not a place to get your questions answered. It'll get much better exposure here too.

I encourage you to start a new intro thread saying hi.

Carry on.

:thmbsp:

The Technics is a 4 channel unit that I believe doubles its power when used in 2 channel mode. Decent tuner and good looks. SCORE!!!!!

I've been trying to put together an all Technics vintage system, I grabbed this receiver thinking it was the 8500 (it was advertised wrong). There are few Technics receivers worth pursuing but the 8500 is one. Essentially double the power of the 8000. http://www.thevintageknob.org/technics-SA-8500X.html

Nevertheless, I think its a good find. It sounds great! Mine needs a good cleaning however.

lights

anyone know where I could find a wiring schematic for the SA-8000x? the tuner needle will not light along with the stereo and CD-4 lights. I noticed there were 2 wires hanging loose in the case but can't find where they should be connected. the 2 loose wires are in-line with the rest of the illumination wiring so I am kind of making an assumption.

thanks!

Welcome to AK! No experience with either but they sure do look nice, especially the Technic.

Theres a service manual for the Technics here, you will have to register with them for free to download.

review

so after a few weeks of reading many posts and making swaps and adjustments I have found that I like the Technics driving my DCM KX10's the best. to start this was just a little something to keep me sane while my family lives in Idaho, but has turned into somewhat of a problem, at least that is what my wife would say if she was here!:D

I have decided to keep the Pioneer Cs-G403's since they were my Wife's when we met and the DCM's. I refoamed my old Altec-Lansing 305S's just because I have had them since they were new and hold a little bit of sentimental value. But I cant keep them all and the Altec's are not going to make the cut.

I am torn between these 2 receivers. The Zenith really,IMO, seems to shine when I have movies and TV in general. The Technics is hands down for listening to blues and rock, the 2 genre's I listen to most.

So for now it is my Technics with my hand me down freebie DCM's.

Thanks to everyone who has answered my questions, I am sure I will have more!

audiobiker,

thanks. a friend at work is way more into this than me and has offered to work over my Technics for cost of parts. I am a stickler for things working right. The sound on it is awesome and I will miss it while it's on the bench but look forward to what it will be when I get it back. he is going to fix the lights, align the tuner and recap it for me.
