I have an opportunity to pick up a couple of pairs of very rough, possibly DOA Norman Lab Model 10 floor standers. My current main speakers are very slightly tweaked original Large Advents which I run with a Scott 299 or a Mcintosh 1700, and really like. if anyone has had an opportunity to hear both the NL and Advents, I would like to hear your opinion as to which sounded better.

As I recall the NL 10s have much more sound power due to the fact they are essentially a pair of stacked 2-ways in one cabinet. Nice, capable and a grest looking speaker for what it is.

Advents are known for sound quality at a great price. Stacked advents will be better than the Normans, but the Normans might be better than single advents. I really don't remember the sound of single advents/norman 10s well enough to give a good answer to if one is better than the other.

Here is a picture,or a part of a picture of the Norman 10s. Actually had them given to me last year in mint condition. Also have the model 8s that I have owned since new(1980). I have heard of a 10a but dont know the what the difference is. I have not answered your question in any way but I love the model 10s. I can post a better picture for you later this evening if you like.

I'd be curious as to your impressions on how they sound and what you're driving them with.

What you see in the picture is my little setup. A Sony V5, around 90 watts, and a Sony PS-X600 tt. The Normans produce really nice highs and can be bassy, if thats a word, but seem to be very tight bass. I can pull them out from the wall and loose alot of that. The model 8s(1-10" woofer and 1-tweeter) and the 10s are all I've ever owned but I've heard a few other 3 way speakers and pick the Normans over them hands down. They are 4 ohm. Information is hard to come by on them. I was doing a spec search on Normans when I came across your post. Here a link that reviews Normans. Hope this helps.

Last year had an opportunity to listen to the Norman Labs Model 10 next to Yamaha NS-690, Klipsch Forte, and Pioneer HPM-200(?). The Normans were sorely lacking in the midrange. I have been meaning to recap them as somehow I don't have much faith in those caps that say "Mexico" under the printed values. There are those around who are very happy with theirs, though.

Alan

Edit: I would not choose the Normans over my Large Advents. Things could change if I ever get them recapped.
