NOS DAC

Anyone else besides me think it is insane that the industry would NOS=Non-Oversampling. I ask because in my mind when I see NOS applied to anything mechinical or electronic it immediatly means "New Old Stock" or if talking about cars Nitrous Oxide power adder. Anyone know the etymology of this acronym being used to describe oversampling or the lack there of? I would love to know who coined this term in this application.

It is obvious how they came up with it but I was wondering who first coined the term. I am sure there has to be a story behind it like all thinks like this! Just like the naming convention for cars and how you handle different languages like the classic Chevy Nova and spanish speaking countries!

The world is full of TLAs with different meanings. Nos will probably be from the early days of the TDA1541 Phillips DAC chip. Usually it has a SAA7220p chip in front of it that provided the clock and also oversampled 4x. Someone found out that it sounded different 'better' if bypassed. In hindsight the clock wasn't very good and 7220 was power hungry and put out a lot of noise. Of course the origins of Nos might go back beyond that.

It is funny because there are a lot of people that like pushing buttons and having the illusion of control. One of the things I like about my Geshelli Labs JNOG3 with AKM4499 implementation is that they do not give you active access to the rich but reduanant feature set of the AKM4499 and sister chip set. You can not dink around with the sample rate or anything else. GIno has already determined what he thinks sounds best and set it up that way. I often have found in multiple industries that 99.9% of the times a dvice is setup almost identical from one user to another and once setup they seldom change anything if machine is used by many people their are often lockouts or notes telling people not to change the settings of said widget. Often the people dinking around with the control often are the worst of the worst skill wise and product wise and their freq. changing of the setup is a sign of incomptence not compotence!

I can not tell you from 1979 to today how many times I saw an EQ with the smile shape which is terrible. Not once did I ever have an EQ in a space and end up with the smile or the V shape!! I always unded up with an upside down smile or a stupidly shallow upside down V with a tiny spike 3/4 of the way towards the end. Even though I like a little more bass in my music as a classicaly trained muscian I like music to sound real and natural not artifical or distorted from reality if music was visual art I want my statues to look like something from Michael Angelos works not something brutal, modern, abstract and hidious! I think a good many people have no idea what music should sound like and it shows up in how people setup their systems and it is not a class issue or anything like that I just think a lot of people do not understand what good sound actual sounds like!

If I was an OEM I might consider giving audiofiles some controlls that had knobs or switches but where not hooked to the mother board at all kind of like a some of those Baby devices that hang in the crib and give stimulas but do not actualy do anything. So they might feel empowered and give them something to argue about online but actualy keep them from ruining the sound I worked so hard to perfect! LOL

I run TDA1540D without oversampling, love it and the TDA1541/A.

I've had newer chipsets but prefer the sonics of the above chips.

Everyone hears and processes sound differently, and if someone loves newer DAC's or modified frequency responces more power to them.

I’ve never had a dac with the ability to choose different filters. I actually like the idea but it wouldn’t surprise me if the differeces were so small that I couldn’t discern them. Of course my hearing sucks so who knows.

I first remember encountering NOS with auto parts in the 1960's... my Father restored Ford Model A's (1928-1931) and sought out New Old Stock parts from auto dealerships and parts houses that had new but never sold parts lying around in their warehouses.

NOS also was/is an acronym for Nitrous Oxide.
