Yesterday, I noticed I had a sealed Urban Outfitters Exclusive Lana Del Rey album (Norman F@!$cling Rockwell!) I bought about 2 years ago. Over the years, I’ve lost interest in her music. But initially, I was a big fan.

I bought all of her records the last 8 years through Urban Outfitters(before I realized what a trash company they are). Since high school, I’d go in and grab one... my first being “Born to Die.” Once “Ultraviolence” came out, I also bought it at UO because I liked the cover art. When I moved and UO was suddenly down the street from me, I decided to just snag her next album too, in case I decide to start a collection. Maybe, I thought, they’d be worth something some day. Then I bought the next one. And finally, NFR.

I hardly played them, but I thought the art was cool. I kept them in record frames hanging in my bedroom in college.



Where am I going with this? Yesterday, I saw someone listing NFR sealed for ~$150. “Neat” I thought. I figured I wasn’t going to open it anytime soon, so I decided to research my other UO exclusive Lana Del Rey records this morning. I wanted to see if they were worth any value, maybe even possibly sell them. My jaw dropped.

Today, within ten minutes of posting all my LDR records together in one listing, someone purchased them from me for $800. Utterly insane.
Could I have gotten more for them? Possibly. But regardless, $800 is $800. I can’t believe someone bought these records from me... only one was sealed. Plus, I made sure the person receiving the records would cherish them like I used to. To say I’m a happy camper currently is an understatement.

This post is not meant to be a brag. But I encourage all of you to look through your vinyl one more time. You may find a gold mine

That's pretty awesome that you were able to profit from it, and at the same time feel good about selling it to someone who'd cherish them as you did! You could've sold them for much more.

100%. Though selling Ultraviolence was a pretty tough decision, I think it’s for the best. I can always buy a repress.

I've got numerous records that I've bought over the years (all were opened & spun) .. that have really went up in the price over the years. Don't bother to keep track all that much .. might be tempted to sell. None that would go for $800 though.

One that comes to mind .. is a mint copy of David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust MFSL .. paid $30 for it pre-owned in Nm condition many years ago. I've seen it go for hundreds dollars on eBay. Won't sell it though.

Great story, there's nothing better than moving unused stuff to a better home and getting a little back for your storage time. In another thread I found out that all of my 80's heavy metal albums are worth good money now, I used to snap them up for a buck or so back when I was a buyer.

It’s an original 1st pressing Michael Jackson (Thriller) and apparently because they left out Michael as the Co producer on less than 200 before they caught the error makes them sought after .

I’ve had my copy sitting in my collection for quite awhile hardly played and in NM-EX condition that I got for $1 years ago lol . So like you said you never know what you got in your collection

The best way to get a great (and valuable) collection is to buy with your heart.

Years ago I bought All them witches debut album when it first came out. Great start for a fabulous band. That album is now worth 250-300$. It's one of my favourite bands so selling is not an option.

I found a copy of the Ultraviolence, 2 picture disc set, missing the cd at GW for the usual $1 and sold it for $95. Nice price, but not my cuppa musically.

These are/were LPs (vinyl) or CD media?

Past that, all of the LDR in my collection is in (lossless) digital form(at), so no "physical media" to vend unto the masses.

I have quite a lot of experience re: selling recordings -- LPs, 45s and even (especially?) 78s -- obtained "cheaply" and even for free, but all of 'em were genuinely/really (really) scarce items -- e.g., very small-batch pressings, "only one known" 78s, etc. -- nuthin' in the "big print" range that I'd imagine your LDR recordings to have had. The collector demand for LDR physical media must be enourmous.

Nice! I like stories like that. A guy I played music with a bit had a story about a old tube amp (probably for a PA) that was left in the music department of his high school. He asked if he could have it and since it was just sitting in a closet unused (and probably to them it was very "old tech") they gave it to him. He sold it on ebay for enough to buy a really expensive bass guitar with the earnings (over 1k). Another musician friend, who was a big fan of Queen, decided that he had to have the Brain May model Guild guitar, which he spent a bit over 1k on. As much as he's a fan of May, he didn't really like playing the guitar and got rid of it some years later... and earned enough to put and new roof on his house and still have a bit of change left over...

As I so often say "there's no accounting for taste," and subsequently no accounting for waht folks will spend crazy amounts of money on...

I have over 1,000 LPs and though I don't really go after collectable stuff, I've managed to find a few things for very cheap that I'm sure are worth a fair bit, but nothing like what the OP had. I have what seems to be an original pressing (or at least very old one, pre bar code) of The Stooges' Raw Power and a few very old Max Roach albums on the Mercury label.... all great condition and all bought for a couple of bucks each. I'm guessing that these could be worth $50-$100 or more. Funny though that as many LPs as I have, I doubt that there are very many other the the aforementioned ones that are worth very much...

I sold off several gold CD's last year and they sold like hot cakes. I spoted a few more in my CD rack the other day and I'll be selling them when I get around to it.
