Not sure what this means

I have been noticing on this group of used vinyl that i got for free recently that the surface noise is worse at the start and gets betterthe deeper into the side it gets. Does this mean I am not cleaning the outside of the record as good as the inside or could it be a setup issue? Thanks guys?

I guess yet another possibility is it's just the record is damaged. I will also so the cleaning it's getting right now is not terribly deep. I put the record on an old clean Tshirt on the table and use the Discwasher and D4 solution and give it a little scrub with slightly more pressure than the turntable will stand. Repaeat on other side. Then I play and if it sounds a little off I use some GRUV GLIDE on it. Let the cleaning criticism rip.
 
Another idea: tangential speed is highest at the outer edge, and if a disc
was played under poor conditions (worn stylus, etc.), worse damage may
have occured in that area.

Seriously thanks though guys for the input. i am still learning here. I have only been spinning for about a month. Even with a little surface noise between songs, it's still awesome.
 
The edges take all the beatings when getting slid in and out of the jackets. Look at the record at an angle in a strong light from one source. Flash it until you can see the surface scratches. There will likely be way more near the outside than from track two on inward.
 
The first thing you need to do when you buy vinyl....be it new or used.....is to immediately take it out of the crappy paper sleeve it comes in and put the record in either a DiscWasher record sleeve or Mobile Fidelity record sleeve.

This is something I am doing. I bought a back of the MOFI inner sleeves and some i don't remember who outer sleeves. When I get a record, it comes out of it's sleeve before i clean and play it and never goes back. I do keep the sleeves if there is stuff on it though. It just lives in the cover serving no purpose though.
 
Or maybe your like me:yikes: I hear the pops at the begining and then just hear the music and don't notice them as much as after awhile. I do agree that the outer edge gets more abuse than the rest,unless a UPS driver had 'em:D

Sorry to say this all goes back to treating the LP with care. Cleaning a LP, whatever method that works for you, proper cartridge/stylus setup and LP storage with inner/outer sleeves all contribute to the final sound your going to hear. Unfortunately a good number of "preowned" LPs were never taken care of and played with misaligned and worn out stylus for years and they will never sound decent no matter how much they are cleaned. I purchased a MFSL 180 gram LP that looked excellent with no visable scratches but when I played it the sound was like a buzz saw, the LP had been destroyed with a worn out stylus.

This is true. Unfortunately I don't have the option of being TOO picky. All of the used stuff around here that I have found is in the looks good but sounds almost good condition or worse. Me thinks I will be stimulating the economy soon by purchasing a RCM though. I think it will do a much better job cleaning than I can....hopefully.
