Not sure what to do with this old audio gear (Rotel & 'Paisley' SPL4000)

I have left this stuff stored in my parents basement for decades. My parents live in the middle of nowhere, meaning they are not in what I would call a "used audio equipment friendly market".

I'm mainly curious about the Rotel RA-1412 integrated amp and the SPL 4000 speakers since I'm guessing the rest of the gear is worthless. I'm thinking of taking everything to a local used electronics shop or pawn shop.

Any idea what this stuff is worth?

Hello Ron & welcome to AK.

Any posts regarding the potential value of a piece of gear should be posted on the "Dollars & Sense" board.

Have a look at eBay and see what it goes for there
--> thats what most folks do with unknown gear.

Or - Become a SUBSCRIBER to AK
--> and list the items in Bartertown to sell here!

Or ... Good luck with your pawning ...

Check out HiFi Shark--it gives a separate tab for results containing "sold" and "ended" listings, so you can get an idea of what these might have sold for. They are a search engine that spiders all of the sale sites like eBay, Audiogon, US Audio Mart, and a few forums and other sites which have public ad listings.

I saw a Rotel SP-3000 in my friends shop today priced at £99. He said I ould have it for £75. I read an article on this site about this Rotel turntable and the discussion of which stylus is best suited.

Seeing a chance to get someone into a much better hobby, I will spend some time for you, Ron.

I will make a wild guess that the Rotel RA-1412 is worth $US 500-1000 in Vancouver. Wild guess because there are no recent ebay sales showing up for the Rotel on ebay (meaning none in last three months). However, from it's specs (available hifiengine) is is a high end unit from a respected manufacturer. There are models listed for sale for around $1000 on ebay. Rotel is a smaller selling brand in North America so data will be sparse on sales.

Very roughly, there are three ways of selling gear in this value range:

Ebay - items in good cosmetic condition sold as working and tested receive top dollar if well presented and sold by seller with good history of feedback. These items are sold, essentially, with a six month warranty. Non-working or items with specified problems receive less.

Local craigslist (or equivalent) as WORKING - a tested, working item can be sold locally for about 50-80% of ebay value. Depends on market and item. This is usually always a cash sale with no ebay fees, no shipping and handling, and no warranty.

Local craigslist (or equivalent) untested - vintage audio gear often has issues and needs testing and often some service (cleaning of switches) and sells locally for 25%-50% of ebay value (depending on market and item, and usually tending toward lower end of that scale). Testing means more than plugging in and seeing that unit powers up but means testing each function and listening for sound quality. Untested gear is a gamble for the buyer. There are people called flippers (might sound dirty to you, and some might agree :)) who often compete to acquire untested gear at discount prices. Note that untested gear can also be sold on ebay.

Value is highly dependent on cosmetic condition.

If you list the Rotel for sale in Vancouver untested at a decent price ($500), you will have flippers calling you -- and you may, or may not, enjoy the process.

I'd guess the speakers are worth $50-150. Evidently a good, but unknown brand with cheap look and will likely need 4x woofer refoaming -- around $40-60 each woofer.

Those SPL-4000 speakers are very unknown and underrated. If you plan on building a system for yourself, you could do much worse.

Lee.
