But I just cant pass up on a brand that I know I like. Even more so when price is right.
Yesterday I happened to come across some fairly small bookshelf speakers. They are truly "modern" bookshelf type - we all know that some vintage Bookshelf speakers are huge and would not really fit on most book shelves.
Funny thing is that I dont really need any more speakers. Those that followed my " I hate my Klipsch Heresy" thread know that I was actually selling speakers off lately and getting another pair was not something I planned.
Anyway, went to a local flea market yesterday and spotted these speakers in a booth that sells stereo stuff. Most of their stuff is not anything special, but every now and then they get some interesting pieces.
At first I didnt even spot these - kinda looked around and was about to move on, but suddenly saw a familiar logo - Mirage. Well, as some here know, Mirage made some fantastic speakers. So I had to take another look.
Small, not too heavy, look like thin walls, grills dont come off so no way to know how drivers look, a bit dirty too - I was about to just leave them there - after all , I dont need any more speakers. But the guy that runs that booth came up and offered to hook them up. Since I was not in a hurry, I agreed. First thing I thought when he fired them up is - WOW. I just couldnt believe that such a small speaker can sound so big. I thought to myself - if price is right - I'm taking these babies home.
Price was more that fair and I have yet another (3rd) pair of Mirage speakers in my collection. These are Mirage M-90i.
Next to a cassette on a top of ADS L710 for size reference:
Hooked up to my big Optonica receiver these sound AMAZING!. Of course bass doesnt go as low as some, but I dont expect that from a speaker this size. Listening to them and ADS - these Mirages are at least as clean and clear if not more so. Low end is not bad at all, actually. And it is very well defined.
For a speaker that didnt look like much - these are fantastic. They sound as if the were a much large speaker. And are very easy to drive too. Far better than Pioneer BS-22LR or Polk T15 that I have tried before - these are about the same size. I like these better that ADS L10 I have and think very highly of. But even those that are larger bookshelves - these little Mirages can hold their own pretty well.
For sure a speaker that I would recommend to try.
