Nothing like a swan song of your old gears

G'day

I've recently sold my old gears off. Weirdly, they all sounded exceptionally great when I auditioned them for the last time. Like singing a swan song, they sang with everything they've got. Anyone had that kind of experience?

Ah, sellers remorse. I think I get ya. I sold an Onkyo receiver some years ago, still regret it. Honestly I don't even remember the model, but t was an old school 2 channel receiver. I don't remember how much I got for it, but I learned that Its better to hold onto the old stuff. I will make a couple hundred dollars again but you may never find another __________ (fill in your own blank). Yes I "remember how sweet it sounded" as it's new owner was listening. Maybe just the nostalgia bug, but my policy on gear is at least a bit emotionally driven. Some good pieces are Ok to buy and sell, but the ones you enjoy really shouldn't be sold. Lest you should spend years trying to replace them. (usually to be disappointed at how bad it sounds in reality). You don't want to see my basement. Lol

I learned long ago NOT to listen to anything i've sold in the new owner's system, it's the one thing for me that can stir regret and taint the entire experience. I've never regretted selling anything before it was gone, my decisions to sell are usually well founded, and in cases where applicable i give that last listen before i commit to sell.

That's a good policy. I've regretted selling a few things, but keeping everything is simply not an option.

I struggle with buyer's remorse because I love this hobby and everything I purchase is audiophile to some extent and sounds good. It is difficult to get rid of gear until recently. You just have to envision an uber high end system as an end goal. It makes getting rid of stuff a little easier. I still am on the fence about ridding of my huge Altecs, Klipsch and JBL due to their wonderful synergy with tubes. I am definitely fond of the idea my buddy came up with of having 2 high end systems and getting rid of the rest of the stuff so other's can enjoy it. I realize I can only get around to fixing so much gear. I also like the A/B comparison theory- but then there is the synergy............. I admire anyone who can part with audiophile items. I'm doing it but it is difficult to say goodbye to an old friend.

yup

Yup, when I go to thin the herd, I'll do a check to make sure everthing is working well. And, like you say, it sounds soooo good, better than it ever did, and I hate to let it go. You have to think "that's why I brought it home".

But, the thrill of a new toy means there must be room so something has to go.

Since I have more than I can possibly enjoy in a life time in the "keeper" pile, I just bear down and let go.

But there is that thought..."I'll bet X would have sounded good with Y". I suppose that's why so much doesn't get in the "go" line....crap.

OK, off to check the TT for more...

I have sold nearly 40 now-vintage Fender and Gibson basses and assorted other gig rigs and American-made instruments in the last 35 years that when in my possession, were cheap to buy but are now highly sought-after by players and demand top dollar. Don't you know I have experienced seller's regret big time... And, no, I'm not a dealer, just a player using the best tools available within my budget. I play Squiers now.:tears:

All these sound like stories from penitentiary...:D

Well I took some photos of the gears I parted with last night. Fond memories. BTW, Rega P1's a real 'musical' belt-drive at budget price. I never thought I'd call any gears 'musical' (always sounded weird to me that audio gears should be like some instrument) but that's how I perceived it last night...

I never sell anything but do give away and throw stuff out
Rule of thumb for me is I could never replace it for what I'm getting for it.
Even my old cars get junked when I'm done with 'em.

I don't want to deal with strangers in my home, so I give my gear to my children or grandchildren or donate it to a local charity. We were going to have a yard sale, but health problems killed that for this summer. Most recently I gave my AR4x speakers and Pioneer SX-2700 receiver to my granddaughter.
