Novice PL-10 Troubleshooting

Hello all,

Apologies in advance if this is 1: not the appropriate place to post this and 2: these issues are commonplace and have been answered elsewhere.

I got 1972 Pioneer PL10 and the audio quality is full of static and is of overall of poor quality. I am a complete beginner in the world of turntables and would love some opinions on what could be the problem. My wiring appears to be solid and the turntable is seemingly in good shape. The signal chain appears to be okay, but apparently not as the quality is currently unlistenable.

What would you recommend I do to remedy this issue?

Note:

- I have the turntable directly lined to the phono channel of a Sony STR-DH190 amp.

- The wiring of my amp and speakers are 100% and have great quality when playing via bluetooth and DI.

- The analog movement of the turntable itself is solid. The belt and motor are working accordingly as the speed and overall levels of the table appear to be great.

- My partner got me this turntable from eBay and was told a new cartridge was put on prior to purchasing (I believe it's stone?). I understand some of these cartridges have to be broken in.

- All the vinyl being played is new and clean.

The PL 10 should do a fine job, so something is wrong. It could be that the cartridge isn't set up right - did you balance the arm and then set the tracking force correctly - or that it is a ceramic cartridge, or it might be that the phono input is actually a line level input for people with built in preamps in their table. If the reference to 'stone' actually means ceramic, the problem is that the cartridge is vastly overloading the phono input.
A picture of you set up would help, as would more details about the sound.

Hi PV, and welcome.
I can see that your receiver has a built in phono preamp and riaa, so that should not be the issue.
As Nat points out the PL-10 should not cause any issues, and I also suspect that it is the cartridge causing trouble, unless the tonearm has not been correct balanced, and the tracking force is way off.
Try uploading a few pictures of the cartridge, and as much of a close up of the stylus as possible.

Please define "static", perhaps including some video or audio of what you're hearing.

We need to discern whether you're experimenting hum (a 50Hz/60Hz noise), scratches and pops, or maybe something else.

A pic of the cartridge and needle would be good too.
