Now, for my next trick

Damn, y'all! Youse chomping at the bit has me chomping at the bit too! I'm just not a good waiter, else I'd be in the crazy queue too! I'm watching and waiting in spirit with my brethren (and sisteren!)!!!

Production is up to 4K units a day, so order now! Order an additional one for your niece or nephew too! I've had mine since June 4th and it has been a slow learning experience but I've got XPMC running well on one SD card and the standard distribution of Linux running on a second SD card. The Pi sits in the livingroom attached to a 42" TV. The kids enjoy the TV as a computer. I was thinking I needed to upgrade my AVR to a more modern HDMI equipped unit to stream the audio so I'll keep this thread in mind as a USB DAC will be cheaper than an new AVR.

My RPi is out for delivery

I should have my RPi this afternoon according to UPS. I have two SD cards so with the first one I am going to use it for the video link on post #13. The second one I will use for what ever BadassBob comes up with.

I burned the squeezeplug RPi image to the first SD card without a hitch. One step done.

When the RPi arrives I will build the case for it and see if I can properly setup the server and player in the same box. This should be interesting.

I got it setup and working. Building the case was the hardest part. Couldn't get my Fat32 drive to work, but the back up hard drive is ntfs and works fine. Works with the DacMagic via USB. I am using a powered hub from RS.

Late for court. More update to come soon.

I just got around to messing with mine today. I have Raspbian installing right now. This install will be painful, only a Class 4 SD card :(

So far here is what I am hearing. It sounds really good. But every once in a while I hear some digital noise like a glitch. It is rare but I can hear it. I can't get it to play hi-rez files. I don't know if it is the RPi or my DAC. It connects via a USB A/B wire. It can serve to different SBs at the same time.

Also if you are using it as a server it is a little slow via LMS. Moose seems no faster. More to come.

I am thinking that I may just use it as a player.

I am disappointed so far

I was listening to the RPi last night as a player (squeezeslave) only device. The RPi was connected to my DacMagic via a powered USB hub and the DM connected to my stereo. The was way too many digital noises that I could hear that is was annoying and distracting.

If I removed the USB hub and went directly from the RPi to the DAC there was digital noise that I could hear when no music was playing. It was obvious and anyone would be able to hear it. The powered hub eliminated it.

Using my old server, a Compac laptop, I could play Hi-Rez files. Using the Rpi as the server it could not play Hi-rez files.

I don't really know if this is a problem with the RPi or with it the RPi interfacing with my DAC. I am going to listen to it today via its audio output to see how it sounds.

Of course there are more than one way to skin a cat so I may try to load Raspian Wheezy and squeezeslave and see if that is an improvement.

Im going to load up Darkbasic on mine with Squeezeslave tonight and see how it works as a player. Darkbasic is a very stripped down distro of Raspbian Wheezy. Without all that extra stuff, it might just work out good.

What about the German dude with the detailed info herein (http://squeezeplug.de)? Am I already behind the curve here? He seemed like he was nailing it pretty well.
For my first implementation I followed the German dude's instructions.

If I use the audio out it plays flawlessly, no stray sounds or cut outs. Only complaint is a thump when you use the controller. Also you need to twist the volume knob more than usual, but that is expected.

As for using it with my DacMagic, it is too distracting. I get a digital crackle every 30 seconds or so. For all I know it could be a problem with the DacMagic or my USB cables.

As for using it as a server with an external hard drive (500Gb used) it is too slow. The German dude used it with a thumb drive so it may have worked faster.

I burned DarkBasic's slimmed down version of Raspian on to my other SD card. I expanded the partitions to use the entire card (4Gb) and attempted to download squeezeslave but I was unsuccesful in the install. Something regarding a shared library conflict.

Here is the error message: ./squeezeslave: error while loading shared libraries: libasound.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I just tried it and here is the output

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package libasound

Thanks for the tip. I am new to linux. But it didn't work.

But: apt-get install libasound2 did.

Things are looking up

I have got squeezeslave working and I am using it with the DacMagic and so far there is no digital crackles. It was only one song but it is a major improvement.

I am going to do some more listening and report back.

It looks like BadassBob's hunch was right and this is the way to go if you want to use a DAC.

Maybe it can be a server too. That would be nice.

Good job. Somday, after you're running smoothly and really rocking your entire hard drive, you'll look back at the minor hangups and laugh. You'll be a whiz at Linux and you'll be blogging your method like German Dude. (I hope; by then I'll feel like I can tackle the Linux learning curve.) I just need a beautiful live-in IT woman who works for love and affection, that would save a lot of lead time!:D

MichaelHigh, thanks. Linux is not that hard really because any problem you run into some else has already solved and posted it on the web.

I did everything from a windows computer

Here is all it took:

IMO, building the enclosure was harder than the Linux part.

A great idea but I don't think my wife will go for it. :D

Nice job idatlof  I need to grab a new SD card, these Micro Center-branded ones keep giving me fits :(. Ill have to pick one up this weekend.

Thanks BadassBob. A bad SD card is frustrating. I ordered two 4Gb, Class 10 from an online vendor for $15 delivered.

I just got Squeezeslave to load at boot up. I needed to run apt-get update before running this command:

sudo apt-get install bzip2 (You don't need sudo if you login as root for Linix newbies).

Also, the RPi needs a powered hub between it and the DacMagic.

Listening update:

It works excellent on regular .flac files but on hi-rez it seems that the music is a touch slow. I maybe wrong here because I can really make out the words to Aerosmith's Sweet Emotion (from an SACD). Maybe I am not used to hearing it so clearly. :D

Maybe this weekend I will install Logitech Media Server and see if it runs better on Raspian then on the SqueezeOS. With a song playing Squeezeslave uses 10% of the CPU's capacity. It would be nice to eliminate a computer and switch from the system.

Please please please use sudo instead of logging in directly as root. Please?

su is fine for this sort of thing. If he were running something mission critical, sudo away  In the end though, su is a risky way of doing things, but since this is a single user environment, you should be ok.

Well I got adventurous and loaded LMS. When I run top it says its running. But when I try to get LMS in a browser it won't connect. Any suggestions?
