NS-1000M Speakers

Bass: these were meant to run with large iron, although some report tubes are ok on them too. Have had good luck with Luxman.

Nice thing about the mid domes is the clarity, yep. But I also appreciate how far up through the mid-highs they go--smoothly, through the ear's most sensitive region without uncomfortably unnecessary xover discontinuities.

Susurus - I didn't realize the NS-1000M speakers liked alot of power. I've been listening to them evenings this week, with my Yamaha M2 amp and like what I hear. Since we have a 3 day weekend - I hope to change out the Yamaha amp and try them with a Cary Tube Amp I have. I'm interested to hear how tubes sound with them.

Found that source material is more important than amps. Analog rules...a good MC cart is nice on these.

And yes my M-2 does well too. Anything the size of SpeakerLab3 with a big sealed cab needs some current behind it. Remember the rule about speaker design and efficiency, can't have an efficient moderately priced small cab with bass extension. Tradeoffs.

NS1000 traded woofer matching with the dome mids over bass extension and it worked...especially for genres outside of Zepplin and ELP. But I have speakers for those groups that crank...

M2 and NS-1000M are very nice. Tubes and NS-1000M are even better.:thmbsp: I've run various Mac tubes, ST-70, and even a Chinese TAD-60. All are memorable.

I don't believe you had those units at that particular time.
This vintage Kenwood amp was probably one described as "silver-faced", the 150 WPC variety. Late seventies?

Has to be the 700M which is rated around 150 wpc. The 700M has been in the house almost as long as the NS-1000M. The KA-907 arrived later but I have always preferred the 700M.

After listening to the NS-1000M speakers with my Cary tube amp - I have to agree with you regarding their performance with tubes. The clarity of mids and highs is still present, imaging is impressive, but they sound a little less "bright" than with my M2 amp. Compared to other speakers I have listened to (most of which are vintage speakers) - the clarity of the mids/highs of these speakers stands out as being unique. I now understand why these speakers have the following which they enjoy.

B-1

Google Yamaha B-1 CL about ailing but fixable B-1 for sale- output VFET's all fine.

Nothing drives the NS-1000's better.

"Ailing" means it's a doorstop.

Almost impossible to find someone qualified to fix a B-1 locally. They are a different animal.

Never seen the TOTL Kenny separates but the best receiver they ever made is the DC 200wpc 180v/us KR-9050 and the NS-1000 is an amazing match with it, hard to choose between it and the Luxman for inner detail. M-2 does well top to bottom so it's usually connected to them. Yamaha plus Yamaha...

Fixable if you have matched sets of spare VFET's ,if they are toast. Spares are usually attached to other B-1 amplifiers.

matched sets = the same ranking #'s.

An update regarding the 1000M speakers. I put my Adcom GFA 5802 amp into system with the AR tube preamp. At this time, I believe this is best combination I've heard. The Adcom seemed to provide more bass and tightened it up at the same time. I thought the highs might be too bright - but that wasn't the case. The clarity is still present and imaging seemed to be more precise also. I didn't realize these speakers respond so well to more power. Sometime in the future, I'll trade out preamp with a Adcom GTP 750 which I think very highly of and I use with pair of Kappa 9 speakers currently. Overall, I'm really enjoying the Yamahas

In general, higher powered amps are faster and possess greater objective accuracy. The NS-1000M is so transparent that these differences are easily heard. The NS-1000M is not inefficient. I've run them with 35 wpc ST-70's and they did a fine job.

Some high powered amps are fast some are slow (see V per microsecond spec). What I found for my NS-1000s and E-stats is a decent HF square wave response. Often high powered amps are better at this. But not always.
