Nuance speakers.. are they actually that bad?

Are they as bad as they’re made to be?

So, I know all about the reasons for hating Nuance. Speakers that pretend to be more than they are, terrible sales tactics, a terrible predatory company, and just all around bad vibes. I’ve avoided buying a set due to the reputation, even as my curiosity burns to hear every kind of speaker.

The other day a set of Nuance speakers with steel stands popped up at the local Goodwill for 30$ CAD, and I couldn’t help myself. The model isn’t listed, but I believe they’re the Advantage Premier model. Bi-wire-able and the cabs are built like tanks.

Maybe it’s because my expectations were so low, and I’ll probably get eviscerated for this, but.. they’re actually not bad. Not bad at all, in fact. A bit brighter and more bassy than I like, but a tiny tweak on the EQ has me sitting with a set of quite capable speakers. They also seem quite efficient and can really crank. I gave in before they did, they played clean and clear as high as I could stand to drive them.

So I have to ask, are the speakers themselves actually as bad as everyone makes them out to be? Are some sets better than others? It seems that this set is from before they started their predatory marketing tactics, so maybe the speakers themselves are also different?

I realize they’re not as rich in construction as they pretend to be. Prop film on paper and all that, but the cabs seem to be built very solid, and the drivers can definitely handle power. So, forgetting the company itself for a second.. if a set shows on the used market, are they an automatic hard pass? From my experience here, I can’t say that I think so.

They were a cheaply made speaker from the mind of George Baker of API. Very cheap divers, dual binding posts that are technically not dual, you cannot bi-amp with them.

They were sold through legitimate dealers though they used a very scetchy demo using Q-sound discs with a Nuance sales rep that happened to be around a lot. They would always turn the speakers backwards and play a Q-sound disc it would amaze people who never heard Q-sound with sounds appearing from all over the place.

However they were not the worst sounding speakers ever made I'd take those in your pic over Bose 301's any day

Parts Express was selling buyout Nuance waveguide tweeters some time ago. Cheap plastic drivers. I removed those, installed Vifa .75 in domes, tested and used in a DIY project. Turned out well. I should have bought more.
