Obscure, Punk, Post-Punk, New Wave, Alternative, etc

Depeche Mode is amazing, great music and perhaps the greatest ability to turn out multiple remakes/remixes for many of their songs. I bet they might just hold a record (not vinyl) for the most singles of any band in history, perhaps even the most songs of any band if you count all the variations...and they are all good!

One underground pick would be Sisters of Mercy (gothic, new wave, alternative...brilliant). If you have never heard, listen to "This Corrosion" and "1959" (studio versions better than live).

I once wrote reviews for a magazine called Sound Choice. One of my first reviews was of the Woofing Cookies album. Gave them a good write up!

Anyone heard of the Judy's? They were from Houston, TX (Pearland to be exact). Their releases were only on vinyl but there have been rumors of a CD reissue for years, you could probably fit everything onto one disc. I know they had two albums, Washarama and Moo and a few singles.
 
i have the Washarama lp, and i think i recall seeing them at the Hot Klub in dallas ... i think. they were a very tight band, strong, melodic punk pop, absolutely cut from the new wave mold...fun to listen to ever now'n'den
 
The Mummies are incredible. Active in the early 90's and on, they are basically a lo-fi garage punk band from San Mateo California I think. They are AWESOME, and press exclusively on vinyl, except for one C.D. and it's a bootleg.

Guttermouth was another one of the great ones.

I could go on and on with bands from O.C. there were ALOT of great ones that were based within ten miles of me. Most of us O.C. Punks new each other and hung out together. Plus one of my best freinds was one of the guys who founded Triple X records so I knew alot of bands from there too.

I just picked up another sealed copy of their "It's Good to Be Ugly" EP. This is one band I wish recorded more. The shows were great.

Wire - From their punk/post-punk roots in the late 70's through the 2000's. Wire never disappoint. My favorite band

Abecedarians - A criminally overlooked band

APB - Scottish post punk band. Finding a resurgence these days.

Ruts - One of the finest punk bands ever, bar none. Their searing "Babylon's Burning" my very well be the finest punk song.

Kitchens Of Distinction - A lot of great music produced before disbanding in '96. Another overlooked band.

The Sheila Divine - Virtually unknown outside of New England, the Sheila Divine produced some of the finest indie rock in the late 90's and early 2000's.

What a shame this thread petered out, i didnt trawl through all of it but THE most avant garde band who thrive on obscurity is The Fall,bar none.

Nice to see the chameleons mentioned here, they come from near me and i am hoping to see them live next time they play.

This thread definitely should be one of those vinyl only playlist type threads....come on guys......
