OH WOW.. check out this new TOTL YAMMY Gear.

This looks a lot better than the $8500 Levinson I had. That amp looked like a beached whale. Or a late '90s Gateway computer case laying on its side.
 
Some folks don't like the knobs & meters. I think its a classic look. Regardless, $7k for a Yamaha is hard to swallow. As mentioned, in that price range you're playing with elite company.

I wouldn't judge it until I had a chance to listen to it. One never knows.

For $7K it better say Bryston or McIntosh before I'd buy it. Don't dislike Yamaha, but for $7K I better have factory parts and support up to McIntosh or Bryston before I'd buy it. This Yamaha gear is sure pretty, their better gear is very nice from the past.
 
The price I've seen anywhere is around $5,200. I've been a Yamaha convert for 35 years, but I'm not lusting after this one. It's pretty, but a sad day to me when Yamaha's "top of the line" is an integrated and not separates, rated at well under half the power of their upper mid-line offerings 25 years ago, and minus that handy loudness contour pot.

Nothing wrong with integrateds. And Yamaha's built some fine ones. I've owned some and loved them. But up the chain, I expect more. Even a bit more than they've offered before, in specs and power. This is pretty, but otherwise delivers neither. if I were contemplating expending that chunk of change yet again, I'd expect equivalent power and specs--or better, since they've had decades to research it.

So I'll stick with my pristine older Yamaha gear with 2.5 times the power and better specs (and that handy loudness contour). And I'm betting a lot of others like me will do the same and these won't sell very many in the U.S.--if they even get offered here.

If I could find an MX-10000 and CX-10000 from 25 years ago for more money, I'd be way more interested in them than this pretty thing (even if those 25-year-old units were multiples of this price).
 
Wow, you guys don't have a lot of faith in Japanese engineering, do you? I believe this will be a spectacular amp. It is up against the new Luxman integrateds, which are some of the sweetest sounding amps I have heard. I don't believe that Yamaha has gotten stupid in the last 30 years, nor will they bring out a product into a very competitive market niche only on the strength of their pretty meters and vintage design.

Lots of really great integrated amps in the $5-$7K price range. In the rest of the world, integrated amps are where it's at. In Europe and Asia, Luxmans LX-550A is their best selling product, but they basically don't even advertise it in the US. Sad.

I don't have a lot of faith in Japanese parts and service support. And for that price, I expect parts, factory service, and support 30 years out. I love Luxman, but with the upheavals in the company, some nice gear is problematic to keep alive. For that kind of money, it must last. And it must be maintainable. With Yamaha, this unit is nice but about unmarketable due to the brand selling everything from cheapie junk to high end in the USA. Which means the dealers who can effectively sell this amp, won't carry the brand due to discounters. Yamaha needs a high end brand in the USA sold and supported by specialty dealers only to market statement products. I support Yamaha doing this and not having Yamaha mentioned much. Which would make this amp and their better new high end gear salable in the USA and Canada.
