Ohm H

Today I picked up some early Ohm H's (serial # 450 and 451). I have not been able to find photos of early run Ohm's. The front of the speakers are painted black as opposed to the veneer fronts. Does anyone know if early Ohm' used the dust caps marked with the Ohm logo? Did Ohm use CTS tweeters in their products?

Early ohm H speakers (mid to late 70's) did not have the ohm logo on the dustcaps. And they used CTS phenolic tweeters. They may have the Phillips dome tweeters, but I believe by the time the H was out, they were using the Matsushita done tweeters. Perhaps Mhardy has an old Tech HIFI catalog with pics....

sregor -Thanks for your response and your first hand knowledge. I pulled the woofers and the passives today and the woofers are Radio Shack. I'm not sure on the passives as there are no distinct markings from Ohm on the passive. Do you know of anyway to confirm whether the passives are original? The rotted foam on the passive appears to be inverted which would lead me to believe the passives are original. The good news is the tweeters are original and they all work and the crossover is intact. Now I'm on the hunt for woofers.

Old Guy8 - Thanks for posting the brochure. My H's are the earlier version with the painted front. It's great that you kept the C2's all of these years; I'm sure they sound great. I really enjoy listening to my Ohm L's and I'm looking forward to getting the H's up and running.

I read into you note you wanted replacement woofers, so wrote following. Reread and you did not say that. So you have extra information if you want to upgrade.
When I upgraded thr woofers, sent to Ohm. They replaced everything but magnets and frames. They came back with external overload protection circuit and poly cones. They first both had interference in voice coil. They paid allto return them. They replaced them. All work fine. It was about $325 - $350. Eight inch likely lower price. They have online parts pricing. Ohm was about same price as better woofers elseware. ContactOhm prez John. See what he can do. Have heard of AK member who got a discount because member. I'm not affiliated.Thiers would be engineered to the system. Mine sounded better after. Good luck. If you want copy of specs from brochure. Let me know.
I do like the warm east coast sount of these Ohms. Next to my ADS's, best of all I own. This is what my woofer look like now.

It's not that I need to upgrade the woofers, but its a matter of wanting the correct woofers. When I purchased the speakers for $35.00 I rolled the dice and when I pulled the woofers today I discovered they were Radio Shack. I'm sure the woofers were replaced long before the internet age. Ohm's replacement policy for woofers is with exchange and at $95.00 a piece it's really not an option for me. The saving grace for the H's is the condition of the cabinets, grilles, crossovers and hi and low tweeters. The hunt is on for either original 8" Ohm woofers or a suitible replacement.

I'd love to see the complete brochure for the Ohm's.

I'll see what I can scan, in a reasonable size to post. May take little time.
The brochure shows the model E has an 8"woofer with 5 oz. magnet. Yours was a 20 oz. magnet and 1-1/2" voice coil, at least in '77. 1700 hz and 5000 hz (series network) crossover.

Scanned and pm you some files. Are you going to refoam passives and audition the shack woofers, before you replace?

When I refoamed my C2'S and removed the dust Cap's i discovered why the voice coil had interference and was rubbing / sticking.... Grease on the aluminum voice coil former that had congealed or hardened ...i cleaned it out with Starting fluid sprayed directly inside while holding the speaker upside down allowing all the grease to be removed then I used white lithium spray Grease gently sprayed back in and on the aluminum former on the inside nowhere near as thick and will never impede the movement of the cone even with age... But will still allow for any cooling effect and or lubrication needed...
I like the original cone and its sound versus poly..
I was able to reuse the original ohm logo center cap..
I did a whole write up couple of months ago if you wish to dig into my past postings here on the Forum

Grease your voice coil? Bazaar! Chassis lube?

Yep...
Not seen so well in my photo..
But yes the factory at ohm acoustics was using a grease that hardens with age....
There's a few threads here on Audiokarma about this..... and it's not ferrofluid .... above photo is factory old hard grease....

Below is my thin layer i replaced it with...hard to see because it's thin and white
