Ohm+M&K making vintage audio fun again

Just finished up two lingering projects and I'm really enjoying the test runs. Lately it feels like it's just been negatives. Amps failing, speaker restos hitting snags..starting to question why all the time and money on this old crap. Not enough chilling out and enjoying.

Yet here I am chilling, enjoying and posting.

The M&K S2Bs-Volkswoofer have been on and off for a couple years. They were thrown out and suffered from the usual. I refoamed the VW but was having plate amp hum issues. Took PS caps to a tech friend of a friend who said they were fine. I recapped the amp board but noise still persisted. Picked up another thrown out Volkswoofer and swapped power supplies. That seemed to work but after some time it went south. So back into the pile they went. Fast forward to a couple weeks ago when I finally put in a long awaited huge Mouser order including 4 screw terminal caps for the plate amps. Unscrew old, screw in new and boom everything is gravy.

Compared the last project I've been testing, B&W Matrix 2, these guys are fun. The B&Ws are demanding, the M&Ks seem happy to play with what I've got to offer.

The Ohm H got dropped off by a friend 14 months ago. Belonged to his dad and sat for many years in original boxes up in parent's attic. He left them with me as a project I could help him with and as a place to safely store away from his kids. He ordered surrounds and crossover caps and we spent an evening drinking bourbon and scrapping old foam. Then they sat. Last month I got the energy to refoam the woofers, last night I finished up the crossover recaps and tonight after work they're alive.

Listening to Daft Punk the Ohms sound great. They dig deeper than I expected them to. Especially with the new foam. The poly caps may have made them a tab bright but my ears adjusted. The dual tweeters definitely add some dimension to the sound. A piano on one track sounded fuller than I've remembered. Again the sound is fun, enjoyable. They have no issues with the sub 100w amplifier. The B&Ws wanted more power and a more refined amp.

Time for 'Some Girls' to really shake things loose.

The OHM Model H....Some of my favorite speakers, I have long history with them since 1978, ever since my brother brought them home one Summer Afternoon that year.
In my opinion that 8 inch woofer with that massive gigantic magnet is the best 8 inch woofer in the business no matter what era then or now!

You're not kidding, the driver is substantial. Working on a pair of Bozak 302s and their midrange B209s have a similar feel.

Are the Ohms still in the family? That was a big investment back in '78. At 2 I didn't have that kind of purchasing power nor did my parents.

I've been using a V-2B for about a year with DQ-20's and a Sansui G-8700DB and have been very happy with the sound. I was using a Velodyne HGS-18 but the M&K sounds better for music. The Velodyne has been moved to the HT system and sounds nice and has no problem shaking the house with ADS 730's and 300's. I have a set of the original M&K Satellites and Servo Subwoofer in the bedroom that my girlfriend listens to mostly in the morning, I'm very happy with those as well powered by an 80 watt Yamaha and Carver C-4000. For $50 I couldn't pass them up.

When I originally posted about a large audio haul including the M&Ks, they got the some attention. As I remember the sub was described as musical. Nothing to compare against but yeah I think it is. I bet the pairing with Dahlquist would be a fun listen.

I'll be refinishing and re-capping the second V-2B. The plan is to do a dual sub setup however playing with other speaker pairings could be interesting. ADS L470s (300/500 if I can get some tweeters) and Dahlquist DQM5s could work.
