So I bought a 2006 Dodge Hemi 5.7 a few months ago and decided to take in for a oil change and the guy at a 5 minute place said it would be about $90 So I said no thanks. So off to the local parts place and $75 later I walk out with all the oil and filter to do it myself. I have always changed my oil and filter myself but I'm getting too old to do it. Gezz I'm getting old Fast!

i am confused. You could pay someone to do it for $90. Instead, you paid $75 for parts and you do all the work. I would gladly pay someone $15 to change my oil.

I always changed oil myself. But as I've gotten older I find it is much better for me to pay someone to do it and have it done quickly than for me to do it myself while taking much more time. I also pay much less than $90 for oil changes.

My Crown Vic got Mobil 1 Extended Service for a long time but I switched to Costco when everything went through the roof. Costco is about half the price of Mobil 1. It tests just as well as premium brands. 6 quarts and filter is less than $25 for the Crown Vic.

I buy several 6 quart boxes of Mobil 1 when it is on sale. The Mobil 1 sale price is typically $28 for 6 quarts which is about 60 cents a quart more than Costco’s Kirkland Signature oil here. Not a big difference for me. Actually the last time I purchased 2 boxes of Mobil 1 at BJs it was a better sale than normal and was only $18 for each 6 quart box which is cheaper than Costco.

I agree as I get older it's harder to do myself but it will be a morning of listening to some FM and some coffee chilling for a change and that is worth more than anything in my book.

Costco is $30 for 10 quarts.

Like most here I've always changed my own but I'll be 66 this year and the last two oil changes for me were hell. Guess it's something about my age, health and that damn concrete garage floor...
While I'm not real keen on the fast lube oil change places (had one strip out an aluminum pan once), I'm thinking on my next change I'll furnish my own oil and have my mechanic do it.
I'm sure it'll cost me but it may be cheaper in the long run. I put an average of 2K per year on my car so it isn't like it'll add up quick.

The last oil/filter change on my wifes Mercedes E350 was $275.00 they give you a loaner for the day though usually a new Mercedes. Makes the $90.00 change on my Silverado seem cheap though

Went back to changing my own oil years ago after watching too many guys at the oil change places putting the drain plug back in while it was still gushing old oil. I am under the impression the quicker the oil change the more old oil stays in it.

Usually get Valvoline Synthetic HM their additive package for some reason helps keep the old lifters in the Ranger engine a lot quieter and I have tried many of the others in that engine. Used to get the Motorcraft filters at WM for $3.97 but they quit carrying them, ordered a few from Amazon for that price. Drain it until it slowly drips. Only 55 so hopefully a number of years of DIY old changes left in me.

Bought a few jugs of Valvoline back when WM had them on sale at $22.47 and they had a $5 rebate per 5 qt jug. I think that rebate ended back in May.

Recently got the 5 qt WM brand HM Synthetic and Toyota filter (@WM) for my brother's car for about $23.

I have to admit when I change my own takes more miles before it turns dark. But with the Ranger need to change around 4k, around 4300-4400 it starts dropping in power and will see some fine dark bits in the oil.

Old oil usually Advance or O'Reilly the latter has a store I can walk to in 5 minutes, the latter also has a drum for old filters. Had to walk farther up the hill to Advance last time since O'Reilly had their tank only about an inch from the top of the ring below the lid on their tank. Advance here don't take the filters. Somebody got legislation passed back in 2009 making putting oil filters in the trash illegal in North Carolina. Easy to enforce I know. Can also take old oil and filters to the city hazardous waste center. No charge for those options.
