I've heard (haven't seen) that some reviews/comparisons in the 50's liked the Rek-O-Kut better than the Garrard! I don't have a 301 but eventually I should be able to shoot out with a 401.
 
Ooooh, nice one, I look forward to seeing what you do for the base/plinth. Is your Grace the wood arm or metal?

The 704 is the metal one and the 714 is the wooden one. Other than the material for the arm, they are supposed to be the same.

I've attached some info that a friend gave me.

Ahhhh, I knew they were the same arm spec wise, somehow I thought there was a 704 wood and 704 metal. I was asking cuz the metal arm will look stylin' on that table. Actually, the 714 would look great too.
 
I love Grace tone-arms... One of these days I'm gonna snag a chain drive station TT with a Grace arm, and be one really happy camper.
 
The metal Grace arm was the 707.
I used to have one on a Rega Planar 3(with Supex cartridges).

The 707 is a nice metal arm but it looks quite a bit different. The 707 has a small, round metal shaft - low mass arm for high compliance cartridges. Here's a pic of one taken from audiogon.

The hysteresis synchronous motor, while not much more powerfus than the normal 4 pole version that Rek-O-Kut used has, because of it' many poles,almost no hum. It' speed is regulated by the 60 hz power line frequency and is therefore extreemly acurate. (fwiw)
 
Well, I picked it up yesterday and it looks just like the pics. Clean, and virgin territory. It's too bad someone opened up the box and took out the paperwork but it doesn't look like the TT was ever mounted/used - pristine.

I'm going to be looking out for some really exceptional veneer and see about getting this TT up and running this winter.
 
just bought B12

Hi, I am new here and to vintage audio. I'm 47 and I just bought my first real turntable a couple weeks ago (a realistic lab 420 with shure R47xt and x5 styl.for $25)Now today I bought a ROK B 12 for $80.It has the ROK 120 tone arm with a cart I can't ID and no stylus.The motor runs and turns the table but it is noisey aand clunky. The motor is squarish instead of the cylindrical ashlands I see here.I am hoping to do some maintence ans replace the cart. and be good to go.Will a Shure cartridge fit in the 120 tone arm? Is this a worthy table? What is the difference between it and the deluxe. Thanks
 
Good for you, I had a K33H belt drive years back, platter weighed in at about 6 pounds and as has been noted, built like a tank.
 
Terry Dewitt has an excellent reputation. I've sold some equipment on Ebay or Audiogon and the buyer asked me to send it directly to his shop to have it gone over. My biggest regret in selling something that was sent to Mr. Dewitt was a pair of McIntosh MC-30 amplifiers that I used to power a pair of LS3/5a's. They sound much better than the MC-60s I had at that time and although the MC-60's might have lived up to their reputation as being a better amplifier, they were the best sounding tube amplifiers that I've heard to date. In fact, they were the best sounding amplifiers I've ever heard. I now have a pair of Linkwitz Orion 3 way active loudspeakers that couldn't use these amps unless I had six of them, using such a combination might very well have been something to tame the slight hardness that I hear when using the Orion's with a Benchmark DAC and a generic transport. Not that I'm knocking the Orion's, they are fabulous speakers - better than any loudspeaker I've ever heard, but that clinical sound that one hears when using the Benchmark would have been ameliorated I'm sure. Although tube amplifiers would probably not work well with the Orion's ability to plumb the depths of deep bass in the most convincing way I've ever heard. But Terry Dewitt has a solid nationwide reputation for good, honest d pricing and excellent work and I can't recommend him high enough. And I'd love to drive one of his Woody station wagons from the late 40s or 50s that were on his web page the last time I looked.
 
A while back an old one went through my hands for repair. I wish I could have kept it. Beautiful styling, built to last and functional.
