OK, time for some Luxman Misconceptions and Questions....

Picked up the RX-103 receiver and cleaned it up cosmetically (only) and plugged in some headphones to listen to some CDs.

Misconception 1: I used to believe that this "suckface" receiver would not work if the "suckface" mechanism itself did not work. I was wrong, the headphone part works just fine with me physically pushing in the "suckface" panel by hand.

I will try it with speakers soon. Question: Can the "suckface" be locked in the "sucked in" position?

Misconception 2: I used to believe that these receivers were not remote controlled, but to my surprise, there is a remote sensor. Needless to say, I am one lazy poop, so if I can get a nice sounding remote controlled receiver, I would be quite pleased, which I am . . . . . except . . . . . I do not have the remote itself.

Help me, please, I need to source one of those remotes, can anyone help me? Or . . . . hmmmm . . . . can I program a universal remote to work with this receiver???

Codes man, I need codes . . .

Misconception 3: Vintage receivers do not have a MC phono input. Well, I was wrong, as this one has both MM and MC phono inputs. I can't wait to try out the phono section . . . just don't have the space in my studio apartment . . . must remove one amp and replace it with the Luxman, at least for a while.

Can I expect a decent MC phono section on this Luxman?

Misconception 4: Most vintage receivers are beautiful. Well, I'm not sure about the Luxman yet, the jury is still out, but the more I look at it, the more I find myself liking it.

Opinions on the looks??

Yes, the mechanism can be modified so it locks the face in the retracted position - basing that on a KX-101 deck I received in that condition. I restored the face to working properly but it was definitely stuck in the "in" position when I got it.

The 103 was remote controlled, the first Luxman to have that feature, I believe. I sold them new. My 101 was in the in position also so yes it can be done. I think the suckface series isn't ugly but it's not really my cup o' tea. They surely have their own look to them. Quite a nice sounding receiver actually.
 
The model number for the remote control is RC-103, I have detailed instructions on how to replace the belt for the "Suck Face" which is usually the problem.
It is a very cool looking and nice sounding receiver.
 
Most if not all Luxman units of the 80's have MC/MM inputs. Standard fare.

If the phono section is the same as the L series integrated amps of the same era (highly likely, as they had so many more or less identical models at the time), the phono section is a simple but practically flawless implementation. Nothing to improve upon, there.
 
I had one of these a while back: it was quite a conversation piece. Ultimately, I moved on as I had other pieces I enjoyed listening to more...

I have to say, I miss the expressions I got watching others when I powered mine up.
 
I'd stick with the correct belt. The motor that runs the suckface mechanism is not very robust, and the added drag from using a thicker belt will kill it if you aren't careful - been there and done that.

Need to make sure the rest of the mechanism moves freely & has lube where it should, also.

Anyone know what belt this mechanism needs? Seems a shame paying 13 bucks for a 99¢ belt. I'd like to add the correct belt to an order I'm building.
 
Not sure if they're all the same... I probably can dig up a part number or spec on the one I used for the deck I serviced last year, but no idea if it's the same for the receivers.
