Okay . . . I admit it. Bonehead move by yours truly.

After a few weeks of cleaning and set-up, new stylus, etc., I took my (new to me) Dual 1228 for a test spin.
It needed an adjustment for the landing point of the tone arm on the record. The eccentric adjustment screw was a bit tight, so I did a search and found some (bad) advice.
The suggestion was to use a tiny drop of penetrating oil in the screw hole, then use a hairdryer to help the oil/grease dissolve to free the screw.
Fair enough. It actually did work. However . . .
The %$#^ heat from the hairdryer warped my speed selection lever. The damn thing was near perfect and now looks like something that should be on Salvador Dali's record player!
I am so mad at myself for not thinking it through. Note to self: Old plastic has a low melting point.
Now to find a speed lever that is in near perfect condition.

Ugh, I feel better.

Could be worse, part of this addicting Hobby
Won’t be the last oops for any of us….
Pretty common table
You should be able to find one
Good Luck

Thanks guys! You just know that moment of " you stupid SOB! . . .". Kind of where I'm at.
I'm sure one will come along. I just hope I don't break something else while replacing it. :D

Go to epray and search for this:
Dual 1228 - Speed Lever - Turntable Part

No affiliation.

I once tried to "tighten up" some Acoustat 2+2 electrostatic panels once...they had developed a little slack.

Yeah, ha ha, slack...blew them right apart with the ol' hair dryer. I got replacement panels and they've been waiting for me to figure it for several years.

We should get "Bonehead" audiophile merit badges for our Hi Fi sashes.

Oh boy! I feel a little better knowing that I'm not the only one! :beerchug:
Thank you for sharing. We've certainly earned the badge.
At the very least, perhaps a stickie thread called "The Confessional" where we can confess our sins to get them off our chests and warn the world of where you wind up when you make a wrong turn.

We've all done them. I can't think of any right now I would admit too but it's happened!
:)

Let's see - I soaked a cueing mechanism in acetone and it ate the plastic handle on the end of the lever.

And the usual stuff, snagged a stylus on a shirt sleeve, dropped a record weight, etc.

Learned something new as a result of my bonehead move . . . Dual used at least two styles of speed selector lever on the 1228 (early model and late model) even though the 1228 was only produced in 1973 & 1974 I think. The good news is the speed lever and the stop/start lever are identical. There are a few on the big auction site that are kind of rough. I'll try to hold out for a real clean one.
Should anyone come across a nice one here's the style I need:

Man, look at how pretty she was . . . Lol!

My last dumbass stunt cost $1500 to fix at an Infinity dealer. Swore off repairs to that thing ever again. You are NOT alone.:bye:

Ouch! Sorry to hear that! If my entire turntable burst into flames it wouldn't be a third of that $$. I have no right to b#tch.

Why didn't you show it to us as it exists, now? Heck, we could have devined what it should look like.

:D
