I had bought a Knosti record cleaner back in the Spring and used our unheated sun room for my cleaning /drying station.
Now that Winter is here, I wanted to move indoors and have a faster cycle time so I began looking at RCM's.
I decided I wanted something with an automated turntable and I wanted to keep the price down to below 5 Franklin units.
This left me with two choices-the Pro-ject VCS and the Okki Nokki.
Santa was very good to me and I ordered the Okki because Audio Advisor was offering a free dust cover with Okki Nokki orders placed before 12/31/16.
Well, this thing is really good! I have cleaned perhaps 15 albums and many show dramatic improvement in sound quality even after being cleaned with the Knosti. The entry and exit grooves are much quieter and the background noise seems reduced.
I use a homemade cleaner of 80% distilled water, 20% IPA, a few drops of Triton X 100 and a couple drops of Kodak Photo Flo.
My rinse is distilled water and a couple drops of Photo Flo.
I clean the album twice with the homemade cleaner and vacuum after each time, then rinse twice also vacuuming after each time.
The result is a pristine, like new album.
I found it does not take much cleaner to get the album clean. I use a Bob Ross foliage paint brush and just getting it wet provides about the right amount of solution to suds up the records and so a good clean.
The brush provided with the unit is pretty stiff compared to my Bob Ross brush.
The Okki Nokki is not as loud as I expected it to be when using the vacuum. In fact it is about half as loud as the wife's canister or upright home vacuums.
The turntable makes a bit of sound as it turns but is not annoying. It rotates at about 16 rpm. I sometimes wish it was faster but that increase of speed might help any fluids applied move to the edge and off the record.
I do have one regret!
I wish I had gotten one of these earlier! If you have more than 100 albums or like to buy used records, you really owe it to yourself to get an RCM.
So now I am able to clean a record before playing it which has the benefit of keeping my stylus' clean. Ifeel this will give maximum life to all my equipment.
