i recently acquired a pair of MG1.6QR. Here is a pic compared to my MG1. While I like the 1.6 more, the older MG1 sound similar and don't give up much.

If someone is looking to get into Magneplanar speakers, older ones can be purchased relatively cheap. They most likely will need work but will reward you with the special planar sound.

But the MG1.6QR has a ribbon tweeter, which the MGI (and MGII) lacks. I find Maggies to be much less engaging without the ribbon, although I suspect that depends quite a bit on the type of music you listen to.

ETA: just had another look, it's not a ribbon, but a quasi-ribbon for the entire speaker. I have yet to hear the Maggie quasi-ribbons and don't know how they compare to true ribbons, so I withdraw my comment.

The true ribbon vs. the quasi-ribbon is night and day. The true ribbon is the nice tweeter the quasi-ribbon is a way to make the speaker description sound like it has a ribbon, it isn't one though.

Quasi-Ribbon is Magnepan speak for using flat wire on Mylar instead of round wire. I guess it helps some but it is not a ribbon driver as you pointed out

I wonder if the Quasi-Ribbon panels are more robust than the round wire panels? I hope the flat wire adheres better, and won't delaminate, like the round wire is prone to do. Both are aluminum wire, flat vs. round, the newer the better?

the adhesive was also modified/changed iirc.

neither my 2.5R nor my 1.6QR have needed a repair yet.

Believe it or not, my MGIIIa’s have never been under the knife and no buzzing at all.......yet.
Could be environmental...I don't think think there's been a definitive answer as to what causes peeling, has there? They're certainly old enough.

Not to my knowledge, anecdotal evidence suggests cold climates moreso then humidity levels, but no-one has done a definitive analysis afaik.

luckily, cold here doesn't mean what it means anywhere else, and humidity is nearly the lowest average in the country. (at least luckily for anecdotal evidence)

the newer ones i picked up lived in MN its entire life. Each panel had at least 4 wires loose but none broken. I don't know if this was from the weather or from the owner (cats, dogs, moving them, ...).

I had to remove the entire tweeter wires from the MG1s and start over. They were oxidized and broken in several places. No idea if they also lived in MN for their entire life but I bought them close to my house.

A very broke-in pair of 1.6s with an outboard , upgraded crossover augmented with an SVS SB3000 is what I'm currently driving.
