Old audio magazines

I work at a state university. Last week it occured to me the library might have old copies of audio magazines. During my break I checked and indeed they have bound volumes of Stereo Review and Hi Fidelity back to about 1962.

I've been back several time just to flip pages. It is fun to see old advertisements, articles, and reviews of equipment. I've found information on some of my more recently acquired vintage equipment. I even remember some of the articles and reviews I read in the 70's.

I remember I used to receive Stereo Review and Hi Fidelity as well as Audio magazines back in the day!

Can you check and see if they have any copies of "AUDIO" magazine? :scratch2:

Thanks for posting and sharing this.

High Times, was that the mountain climbing magazine?

I see old magazine ads (and reprints) for vintage gear on sale on ebay all the time.

Hey, you should check to see if they have any bound issues of Rolling Stone.

I will check. There are already enough to keep busy for quite a few lunch breaks!

I subscribed to Heavy Metal, National Lampoon, Stereophile, Stereo Review, and Audio. In the school library, I used to read the Schwann's catalog when it came in.

Funnily enough, I somehow ran into a copy of Popular Mechanics from March 1957 today, being used as a prop on a film set. I was flipping through only to be to pleasantly surprised by a small article on the "new concept of hi - fidelity" or something along those lines .. The article made audiophiles out to be like some foreign basement dwellers from outer space, tinkering and toying with their amplifiers and speakers - of which consisted of not one, not two, but three! (three?!) different sized speakers. It ended by mentioning the vague but exiting concept of stereophonic sound.

Made me smile.

The Engineering libraries at many universities will also have Audio or Audio Engineering, and the AES journal among other. Another is Wireless World, a British engineering journal which was quite into audio.

At major urban city libraries, you'll likely find the mainstream stuff like Audio, High Fidelity, Stereo Review, etc., some in print, many in microfiche or film archive. Don't know of many that have been scanned or computer archived, will have to check out Wiggy's link.

Gear comes and goes here but I hang on to my collection of vintage mags. I bought a collection of several hundred vintage Stereo Review and Audio mags from the 60's thru the 90's a few years back and still have only gone through about half of them. It's quite interesting to say the least to read about the heyday of this crazy hobby.

That's like hitting the mother lode for audio print.:banana:In my vintage travels I have come across a decent amount of audio gear but not one piece of audio print.

I had the same experience at our local university. It was a lot of fun. The only downer was that some of the cool music articles had been torn out. I mean c'mon, spend a couple bucks and make copies!

I've got a bunch of the big 3(Stereo Review,Audio,High Fid.) and I love going through them from time to time.It takes ya back.
