old Dynavector Karat Ruby

Hi,

I have lp12+grace g707 tonearm(eff. mass-7g).
I wonder if the dynavector will be a good match for the grace,is the dyna high compliance? i read that the combination lp12+ekos+dyna karat is bass light.but linn at 1979-1980 used supex mc on the grace!

Please your rcommendation for the above combo,if no,which cart. mm or mc at the same level more or less as the dyna will be a good and dynamic match with the grace?

Very nice cartridge. I think you ought to just try it -- the Grace is an odd arm since it isn't as low mass as it appears, and seems to have been used with lots of cartridges that might not appear to be a good match. Certainly Linn eventually went to a heavier and more rigid arm, but people seemed to have liked the Grace before other options appeared.

Here's a great resource for starting to figure out good matching cartridges.

LP12 and Grace 707 arm are definitely worth spending some time and money on getting right. :tresbon:

Another question for you is do you already have a phono amp that is compatible with a LOMC? Is it also MM compatible?

Thank you for your reply.

The dynavector is low output mc.
No,i don't have phono stage or stepup transformer, can you recommend?
(i have conrad johnson pv10a--mm only)

I'm thinking of the marcof or Audio interface CST-80H or denon ha-1000,

what do you think is better for the dynavector? is the denon good like the other two?

CHEERS.

You could add a nice step-up for a reasonable price. This is supposed to be a decent unit for the money:

You'll want to pick out your cartridge first. You can use the K&K forum to ask about gain so you can optimize for your specific cartridge/gear.
Of course, there are lots of other quality step-ups out there (which I slightly prefer to a head amp but each to his own). The K&K uses Lundahl transformers...but Jensen, Sowter, S&B and Tribute amongst others make good transformers too.

Dynavector is low mass, not really a perfect match to the Grace. As for step up, you may like to look for transformer type since this cartirdge is a bit on the bright side in treble presentation( from memory ).
If you are in for classical and good detailed cartridge, I can recommend my all time favorite the Denon DL-303 or 304, 305, 1000 series, low output MC, very light weight, low tracking force and high compliance - rare in Mc design.

hal1,
I'm a confirmed Dynavector fan having run a Dynavector Karat Diamond 17D Mk II for a couple of years.
There were a lot of recommendations for the Dynavector P-75 phono stage because of it's synergistic combination with the Dynavector cartridges.
I bought a P-75 last October and I wouldn't part with it.It sounds amazing with the Karat Diamond, and I'd imagine it would be similarly good with the Ruby.
It's inexpensive and sounds great.
What are you waiting for?

Did you hear the denon ha-1000? i have a very good deal on it.
Is the input output impadence of the cart.and step up trans. is critical?
the denon input is 100ohms the dyna output is 30-35 ohms.
what can will be the differences?

Did you hear the old dyna ruby(silver) comper to the karat diamond 17d mk2?

Okay hal,
Here's the thing. The "Phono Enhancer" circuit in the P-75 runs the cartridge with ZERO resistance.
Apparently there's something about the design of the better Dynavector cartridges which allows, and optimises the cartridges performance, when run this way.
That is the synergy between the Dynavector cartridges and the P-75.It is also apparently not suitable for most other brand's cartridges to be run via the P-75's 'Phono Enhancer" circuit.
I heartily recommend the P-75 for your cartridge.
